Cameron Rupp and Cole Green from Texas were named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for games of April 19-25, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference.
It is Green's third weekly pitching accolade overall and second in a row, while Rupp is honored for the first time in his career.
Rupp recorded three doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI while compiling a 1.286 slugging percentage to lead Texas to a 4-0 week. He crushed the will of the opponents early and often during the week. In the Longhorns' three-game sweep of Oklahoma State, he went 3-for-3 with one double, two home runs and seven RBI in his three first-inning plate appearances. Rupp connected on three-run home runs in the initial inning of the first two games to give UT a lead. In Sunday’s game, he came up two feet short of his third consecutive first inning dinger, blasting a wall-banger for an RBI double. The junior catcher posted two doubles, two home runs, four runs and 11 RBI to help Texas register the Big 12's only sweep of the weekend.
Rupp also hit a two-run home run in the third inning to put the Longhorns on the board first in a mid-week victory over UT-Arlington. He went 2-for-4 with one double, one home run, two runs and two RBI against the Roadrunners.
Behind the plate, the junior called pitches for a staff that allowed just six runs (five earned) over 36.0 innings for a 1.25 ERA on the week.
On the year, Rupp is hitting .305 with 33 runs, 10 doubles, seven home runs and a team-high 40 RBI.
Green pitched his second consecutive nine-inning, complete game shutout. He was the only Big 12 pitcher to post a complete outing last week. The Coppell, Texas native allowed just four hits (all singles) and two walks while silencing the bats of the second-best offense in the conference.
Green is 9-0 on the season while maintaining a 1.82 ERA. He has allowed just 43 hits and 18 walks while striking out 50 in 69.1 innings on the year. He has pitched three complete games and two shutouts on the year. Opponents are batting .176 and managed just seven extra-base hits in Green’s 10 appearances. Last week, he pitched a one-hitter in a 14-0 win over Texas A&M.
The Longhorns are listed No. 2 in the Baseball America poll and No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll and the Collegiate Baseball rankings.
Texas owns a 34-7 overall record and own a 16-2 mark in Big 12 action. The Horns have won 16 games in a row overall and 14 games consecutive games in Big 12 play.
The Longhorns return to action on Tuesday with a 6:05 p.m. contest against the UTSA Roadrunners at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
