Concacaf Qualifying

USA is already through and a B squad got beat by T&T on the road. Big news is Mexico which could only muster a draw against Canada and now stares the very real possibility of not qualifying for the next round. Mexico goes to Honduras and must win or draw to guarantee advancement, a loss and they must scoreboard watch Canada at Jamaica where the reggae boyz would need to win by 4 goals assuming a 1 goal loss by Mexico to Honduras. Honduras needs a win to guarantee advancement, tie or a loss and they are scoreboard watching too.

The USA vs. T&T game was horrid to watch. I don't know if we ever combined more than 2 or 3 passes together in sequence.

Edu, whom I really like as a player, was just awful. Kljestan was played out of position by coach Bradley, and Beasley took himself out of the game by spending almost all of it in the middle of the park. I guess he thought someone else would play the wide role. What's the point of playing Hejduk in a game like this? Wynne should have been at RB.

Davies came in and brought some much needed energy to a lethargic squad, but we looked pretty lousy on the whole.

Please, please, please, let Mexico not qualify for the hexagonal. Of course, they will, but it would be crazy to see fans reactions if they didn't.

Mexico can still qualify with a loss, provided the +7 goal advantage they enjoy over Jamaica would not evaporate if Jamaica were to beat Canada. The game at Honduras will be interesting considering what awful chokers Honduas are, and they need at least a tie to move on.

Need to check my math, Jamaica must win by 6 goals not four and assuming Mexico lost by 1 goal to Honduras. The same scenario played out in Olympic qualifying for Mexico so its not impossible though its hard to see them not in the hexagonal and then with the fresh start not in the WC.

Whole lotta brain damage required by CONCACAF these days.

I haven't been following it, so let me ask: USA got beat by Trinidad and Tobago? On the road?

They did, but since the US had already punched the ticket, it was a result that only the Trinis, and, conversely, the chapines cared about. Now Guatemala has to beat the US in the US for a chance to advance. No chance. TnT and USA move on.

It's always a good idea to humor scum of the earth FIFA V.P. Jack Warner.

Wow, it almost happened. Mexico loses 1-0 to Honduras but Jamaica only beats Canada 3-0 so Mexico advances on goal differential along with Honduras. US beats Guatemala so T&T advances. Final group play to start next year for WC10.

USA, T&T, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica, top three advance and fourth place has play in.

The US looked pretty good last night; much better than some of the previous games. The Guatemalans weren't very talented or motivated, but we dominated impressively in terms of possession and attack.

Adu, Altidore, Cooper, and Kljestan looked great I thought. The two central defenders (Parkhurst and Goodson) played well too. Bornstein was awful, but everyone else was OK.

I hope we see more from the Cooper and Altidore pairing. They are both threats up top, and when combined with our more creative midfielders, can create a lot of chances.

and Mexico was reduced to 9 players in that game! Not good when you are trying to sneak through on GD. Somehow I don't think the Mexico fans are too impressed with that.

Pretty much what SyracuseHorn said.

I like the younger guys up top. Plus Adu signed my Texas flag last Spring.

I too was surprised at how well our central defense did. Hell, we had Napolean Dynamite back there. Bornstein does suck.

Future looks bright. Can't wait to see when the U.S. plays Mexico in the States next year.

The Mexico game will be in Columbus. No doubt about it. The Guerra Fria part III.

I'll be there for that one.

Mexico will be short players from the red cards in their last game at Honduras, so they won't play at the US.

Seems like a great time to get Mexico.

I'm kind of worried about playing them the first rattle out of the box with Hex qualifying. If we blow that one, then it puts us behind the 8 ball. It's still doable, but we've got to get 1 point at the least out of this game.

Also, don't we lose Mastro for this game as a result of yellow accumulation. That can be a curse and a blessing.

Anything less would be a disaster. Mexico losing wouldn't kill them, because they'd still have all of their home games to stack up points.

Mexico is a lot like Texas Tech. Impossible to beat at home, but very beatable on the road. That said, I would rather have Mexico start the Hex in the US then end it in the US. It amazes me that the Mexican press is already calling for SGE's head, when it is the listless, uninspired players who have not held up their end of the bargain. I expect he'll turn it around, but will be be around to do so?

BTW, did anyone catch the US's draw for the confed cup in June. Not a favorable one, but a great temperature taker: US, Brazil, Italy, Egypt.

So basically we play for a draw against Italy and try to put up a huge goal differential against Egypt (not that Egypt is a gimme, of course).

My international soccer ratings say we're about as evenly matched as possible. They're #30 in the power ratings and we're #29.

It's just that Brazil is #3 and Italy is #4, so after that Egypt looks like a breather. Both teams will point at the other as an obvious must-win.

By the way, the data file is a little jacked up; I'll be fixing it.

I have heard some reports that USSoccer is looking to the western US for the US-Mexico match. It looks like it will be between salt lake city and seattle. A stroke of genius. It will still be uncomfortably cold, and now there is added jetlag for Mexico to deal with. Considering that this is a one off on wednesday, both teams will only have 48 hours with complete squads.

Qwest would be a very large field. You'd have a pretty sizeable ratones verdes contingent.

Salt Lake would probably work. New SSS venue and a likely very pro-US crowd. The cold would also be a factor. The only downer there would be the altitude. That would be more to the liking of the Mexies.....minus the dangerous smog at Azteca.

My friend and I already have our tickets for Columbus. Looking forward to it. I've been to the last two US v. Mexico qualifiers in Columbus and - I have to say - they were on par with the TX/OU games I attended. (I'll probably be banned from Hornfans for that one.)

Anyway, my "Come and Take It" and Texas flags will be on display -- look for us.

I saw the US/Mexico friendly at Reliant a few years ago, and the atmosphere was better than almost every sporting event I've ever attended. Maybe Texas/Houston in 1990 was close.
