Computer modem problem

I swapped out my cd drive with a cd-rw drive the other day (3-4 year old computer) and installed new software for my new printer/fax/scanner. The modem had been working fine up until that day. Afterwards the dial up service (juno) has not been able to log on saying that no modem is hooked up. I checked that the phone line is working and is plugged into the back.

Any suggestions on how I fix this problem? As far as internal workings of a computer, I am somewhat illiterate.

The timing of the modem issue suggests that it may be related to the CD-RW installation or the new printer/fax/scanner software, but it could just be a coincidence. My immediate guesses are that you knocked the modem card loose or damaged it while installing the CD-RW, or that the installation of the fax software overwrote a system file that was critical to the modem functioning. I can think of no other modem issue that would arise due to your recent system ugrades.

We need a bit more info to really be able to address this. Is your modem internal or external? What operating system are you using? Assuming it is some flavor of Windows, does your modem appear in your Device Manager?

I have Windows 98 and it is an internal modem. It still shows up as installed and working properly, but when I try to log onto Juno I get a message that says I am already hooked up to the internet with another ISP and that needs to be disabled before I can log on with the modem. Is this possibly recognizing the USB connection with my printer as an "ISP" connected to the internet?

If you right click "Network Neighborhood" and select "Properties," what network components are listed on the "Configuration" tab?

Without knowing more, there are 2 things I would do if I were in your situation. The first is to completely uninstall and reinstall the modem and the latest drivers (if you know your modem model, you may want to download drivers and take a disk home with you since you won't be able to do this from home until you resolve this issue). The second is to run the Internet Connection Wizard and verify that it is configured to use your Juno dial-up profile. You could also configure it to allow you to connect to the Internet manually, but this may be your problem if it thinks you are connected using some other method.

Perhaps your fax software is trying to use your modem. A few things to try:

1.) I haven't used a modem in years, but it should have 2 phone jacks on it: 1 to the wall and 1 to a telephone. If you don't have a telephone hooked up to your modem hook one up to see if you get a dialtone.

2.) If you don't get a dialtone then its likely something on your computer is trying to use your modem. Since you just installed fax software that seems like a likely culprit. Uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

3.) If you do get a dialtone in step 1 then likely your modem isn't configured properly. May want to reinstall the drivers. If its a WinModem in Windows '98 then that really sucks. Those things are notorious ******* to reinstall.

4.) Just get broadband.

It looks like it was the fax software that was screwing something up. I re-installed everything but that and it all works fine now. Thank you to a couple of you for your suggestions.
