Computer/Internet help

I have a very frustrating problem. Recently, I switched to Time Warner internet (not wireless) from DSL. I have a desk top and a lap top. Ok, when I plug the ethernet cable into the desktop, the internet works fine, no problem.

But, when I take the internet cord out of my desk top to plug it into my lap top, the internet doesn't work. I've tried configuring the LAN connections in the lap top, but nothing happens.

When I bring my lap top over to my GF's place and use her DSL, it works fine. Are there any other recomendations to what do to do? Please help! Thanks in advance...

Your cable modem only wants to see one computer plugged in to it. You either need to reboot the cable modem (unplug it for 30s or more) or use a router that allows both your desktop and laptop to be plugged in at the same time.

yeah, what JB said. The modem can only recognize one computer, so reboot it when you switch computers, or get a router. Routers are cheap. I would do that.
