How can I make my computer start up quicker?

The one I personally use takes about 25 minutes to get fully started. But I have several others that are the same model and everything that only take 5-10 minutes.

How old are these computers? What operating system do you use? How much RAM do you have? What kind of software do you have installed?

2 to 3 years old. Windows XP. I have no idea how much RAM. And typical office software. (Word, Excel, IE ect.) nothing even remotely advanced.

Is it possible to do a fresh install on a new hard drive and access your old files with a USB hard drive enclosure? 25 minutes leads me to believe there are some serious virus/spyware issues or perhaps a failing drive.

Start -> run , type 'msconfig' and hit enter

From here click on startup tab. Use slider in menu to expand the location so you can see final file in each directory.

Crosscheck each item you have checkmarked here: Link

Most of these items are not needed on startup and can be unchecked.

Also good idea to look at add/remove programs in control panel and remove stuff you do not use.
