Computer freezing up a lot

Let me start by saying that everything I know about computers is from someone who knows someone who read on a bulletin board that I should.... You get the point.

Our computer is a few years old, but we just had a new motherboard put in last year with a nice new processor (something like 1800mhz maybe?).

We use SBC yahoo DSL. Sometimes we use the SBC browser, sometimes the Internet Explorer browser. Lately, the computer runs really slow on the internet and it freezes up a lot. After reading yesterday's post about this stuff, I decided to do something about it.

I installed Firefox and it sems to be working alright. I downloaded Sbybot Seek and Destroy. It found 150 files and removed them. Then I downloaded Ad Aware. It found over 700 files to be removed, but the computer got bogged down and froze up everytime I tried to remove them. I had to reboot and start the whole scan over again several times, which took about a half hour each time. It never worked. So I went out and bought Spy Sweeper and it found 30 files and 1200 traces. I quarantined them all, which seems to have worked just fine.

There is one file that it cannot remove. C:NJOOGK.exe
This one comes back immediately everytime it gets removed.

And now when I go online with Firefox, it works fine for a little while, but then I try to go to a new page and I get a window that pops up and says "The connection was refused at hornfans.com" It will then say that for every website I try to go to. So I close the browser and it won't open again,. So now I have to reboot every 15 minutes or so while I surf, which fixes the problem.

The other wierd thing that may or may not be related, is that when I hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and I try to End Task to unfreeze the computer, I have at least 20 or 30 programs running. They all have names I don't recognize, except a few obvious ones like Explorer, Palm Hotsync, SpySweeper. Is it normal to have that much crap going on at once. I found that if I End Task on most of them, the computer runs better. But I don't know how to delete them or even if I should delete them , because I don't know what they do. Everytime I reboot, they are all still there again. Should any of these programs not be running? Here are the names of them:

Explorer
Nyrlo
Ccapp
SWdoctor
Spysweeper
Hotsync
Wab8
Ydagar
Mstcp231
Reminder
2portalmon
Ggf
Admillserv
Ipmon
B033
Hpgs2wnd
Hpgswnf
Hphmon04
Ybrwicon
Usbmonit
Systray
Admillkeep
Hpztsb07
Wkufind
Ipconfig
Ugdmgr (usually not responding)

Any help is appreciated.

sounds like it might be time for a reformat of youor hard drive. Do you have all the disks that came w/ the machine when you bought it?

What OS are you on? Do you have a virus scanner? If so, have you scanned for viruses? Do you have a firewall?

Sorry.....I didn't see buff's post before I finished mine. Assuming you don't have a virus scanner or have an obsolete version, try running this... The Link

(This is TrendMicro's online virus scanner from their UK website. You can run this one with Firefox. You can only run the US website version on IE.)

I second the reformat suggestion. Reinstalling everything and redoing all your settings is a pain, but it's always nice to start from scratch. I reformat my machine every December, and even with all my utilities software, anti-spyware, etc., my computer still accumulates a bunch of crap over a year's time.

If you do end up deciding to reformat, make the process easy - go through everything on your hard drive and make two lists: stuff you need to back up (e-mail, documents, etc), and stuff you need to reinstall.

Mine freezes when I use Kazaa lite and try and view a video download.

I have to use ctr/alt/del and it shuts down.

Isn't there another version of Kazaa that I can try?
The switch to Mozilla firefox was great.

Sheriff, I am not sure.
It's about a couple of years old, right when Kazaa lite started in place of Kazaa.

I would appreciate it.

What other free ones are there?

I also use Limewire, which is free. It hits the Gnutella network, so between it and Kazaa's network, I can find pretty much anything out there.....at least I've never had a problem so far.

Send me a PM with an email address, and I'll get KLite to you. It's a large file, so keep that in mind.
