Component video cables for DVD

When I got my HDTV I just used some old RCA cables I got somewhere to run between my progressive scan DVD and my TV. Putting aside the entire Monster Cable is better than generic, my question is do I need to go get component video cables? It looks fine to me, but, then, I have no idea if I am sleeping in the street on this one.

Also, when the hell are DVDs going to move to 1080/DVI?

Switch your DVD player to progressive and you will see the difference. HD DVD's are coming soon.

btw-you should already be using component cables.

Now what we have here is a failure to communicate.

My question is whether I need to buy actual "component video cables" as opposed to just using the RCA (e.g. Yellow, Red and White) cables that I got with some POS CD player 4 years ago. Meaning I just plugged in the POS cables into the component video female connectors to my DVD and TV>

I have pushed the progressive scan button, and it does look better.

I think what the others were trying to say is that you should throw away the RCA video cables and use only the component video cables. If you're using the RCA video out on your progressive DVD player to connect to your HDTV, you might as well be using a DVD player without progressive scan.

Huh, that surprises me that RCA cables even work in component video output jacks. Either way, I would definitely ditch the RCA cables and upgrade to CV.

the skinny

Here is the deal - RCA is a type of cable connection. You can send any type of analog signal through it. You can send audio through it. You can send composite video or a single channel of a component video through an RCA cable. Component video is a way to transfer an analog signal while maintaining separation between the color channels.

If your DVD player and TV both allow it, you can use regular old RCA cables and get RGB component video. By "allow it" I specifically mean if your DVD has component video RCA output and your TV has component video RCA input.

OK, I am a completely ignorant when it comes to AV things, but I have a related question: For my XBOX I want to get the 30" widescreen HDTV or 32" 4:3 mentioned in this thread. My question is: Will my games be displayed in 16:9 or 4:3 if I get the 30" widescreen?

Depends on the game. Some games allow 16:9. Others don't. There is probably a website somewhere the lists all the 16:9 XBOX games.

Monster vs Generic
Yes there can be a difference between using monster and a generic cable, will it be a night and day difference NO. For a system like you are talking about make sure you have 3 of the same exact cables, keep it away from power cords and you should be fine. In all you should spend about 20-30 dollars for a good set of component cables.
