Compensation for Players

Two former college athletes have filed lawsuits on behalf of NCAA student athletes to gain compensation for players. I am interested what others think, but I think this will cause serious problems with the sports we all love. The only benefit I see is that potentially a player would be under contract to play all four years.

They're already being compensated. Free education, free food, free housing, free coaching, free training, free trips home, free tickets for family, travel stipends, clothing allowances, etc., etc., etc.

The amount of money the NCAA makes off amateur athletes is irrelevant. No one is forcing these kids to play college sports. If they have a problem with the benefits they receive, I suggest they stay home, flip burgers for a living, and be glad they aren't being exploited by the NCAA.

The only change in the rules I would recommend is that players be allowed to work during the offseason. Those who truly feel they don't have enough money to meet their needs will take advantage of that, and those who are just whining because they can will not.

The biggest problem is Title IX which would force all the other sports to be paid as well. Can you afford to pay the girl's rowing team as much as the football players?

Now that the cost of college is so high I have to believe the players are very well compensated. They get over $100,000 in benefits and are being trained for a multi-million dollar career if they are good enough. Compare that to the guy that leaves UT with $100,000 in student loans.

Then there is the camp who feels that the players could get paid a portion of the proceeds of jersey sales and how good they are. Let's see how well a back or QB get blocked for by the players not making as much if any money compared to their larger amount. There would be so much contention and disparity on every team it would be near impossible to have any positive chemistry.

I think the current system is not the best but I cannot think of what would be better, how it could be regulated and controlled nor how it would be fair to all players. This is not even considering the good point about Title IV and the implications that would cause.

I agree 100 percent with what bassale said. They are already being compensated more than fairly, and if they don't take advantage of a free education, then they're morons.

Where is this money going to come from. Recently, it was discussed that only about 20 programs across the nation are in the green?

I think scholarships are 5 years deals and has to be worth at least $150,000. That is $30K a year, tell me how many 18-23 year olds are doing better than that?

The guys that need to pony up some cash to the players are the video game companies. They are using these kids likenesses in a commercial enterprise and making millions of dollars.

Let's say for arguments sake that all athletes gets the same "salary". There will always be those who believe they are worth more because of status or talent and will be tempted to take more from boosters or agents. This is can of worms that has no bottom.

the kids are being compensated by the schools. 95% of the schools couldnt afford to pay the football players. the student athletes should be able to have jobs if they want them and to market themselves and make profits off of that. the schools dont prevent them from that, the ncaa does.

I had never thought of that before, but it makes some sense, General,. How would you prevent schools, or their boosters, from offering lucrative deals in advance of actual fame or production? Or even potentially lucrative based on production.

The business of college football sometimes conflicts with the purpose of college.

I think while a student-athlete is in college and competing he/she shouldn't be compensated for their participation in sports. I've got no problem with them working a job but none of those jobs at car dealerships where you don't have to show up to get paid.

Then after a student graduates or exhausts eligibility, if the NCAA continues to use the likeness of that student to generate revenue, they should get some compensation.

The NCAA's argument that they don't use likenesses because they don't use names is weak. Hopefully they lose that one in court.

There is still honor in being a student-athlete. I would hate to see the system breakdown into which school can pay me the most. If it gets to that, then no school should be allowed to give a scholarship to any player that gets paid.

I know there are many more details to this concept. It's an issue that will continue to grow until the NCAA and member schools address it directly and thoughtfully. Unfortunately they often seem more concerned about a player using a coach's cell phone to call his parents than they do about larger issues like this.

No compensation whatsoever, but NFL should have a minor league for guys that don't want to play for free.

The NFL needs to have a minor league and kill off college football. I am a UT grad, but I think its ridiculous of the NFL itself to make going to college pretty much the only way to get to their league, while this isn't true of any other sport. I think the UFL would be a great way to move in this direction.

The NFL does have a minor league or farm system. Its called College Football. And it dont cost them a dime.
