Comparing Wood and Gilbert

Just a couple of criterion for the sake of discussion:

1) Physical Skills

2) Performance in HS

3) Intangibles

GG seems to have a bigger frame, but not be as fast as CW. For most that would seem like the advantage goes to CW, but you have to have the bulk to take the punishment. I am marking arm strength even so I'll say in the first category it is even.

Have to give the edge to GG on criterion 2 because of the state championship performances at higher level than 2nd Baptist plays.

On the third criterion I'm really unsure because it is so subjective. One of the things I read and didn't know was that GG's dad was an NFL QB for many years and that has to count for something as far as being mentally prepared to handle the pressure that the QB position holds at UT. But I'll say that my "feel" on Wood is that he has the "it" of Vince and Colt. Even on this one too, but whoever turns out to be the superior leader will be our next great QB.

Wow what an embarrassment of riches.

Will be fun to watch these guys over the next 4-5 years.

I'll say one thing.. that pic of Wood in the long thread on his commit... man, the guy looks extremely fit and ready to play. He's exudes confidence and ability. He looks better than most college quarterbacks already.

I'll breathe a big sigh of relief the day he signs a year from now, because we dodged a big-time bullet not having to play against him. On any team in the Big 12, not just OU.

The only knock I see on Wood (hahahaha) is that he hasn't played anybody. Gilbert tore up some really good teams in the playoffs. Houston Baptist Lighthouse or whatever it is doesn't play anyone and I have feeling Gilbert would have hung a hundred on them head to head.

1. Wood is actually the naturally bigger kid and probably the bigger arm. Remember, he's a high school junior. Both are mobile. Wood broke off a 4.32 shuttle as a high school junior which is extremely athletic.

2. Wood plays against future yacht captains, Fijis, and closet homosexuals; Gilbert won two 4A state titles.

3. We'll see.

The only valid comparison I can see right now is that both know how to make a smart decision as to where to continue their football careers in college.

1) I've never seen Wood, but if he can stack up to Gilbert, that is impressive. Amazing that these are HS kids.

2) LT also has played a decent amount of 5A schools plus Shreveport Evangel.

3) LT won two state titles with Gilbert. I've only seen Gilbert play once, but was struck by his poise, decision making, and accuracy. Again, if Wood measures up to Gilbert here, that is high praise indeed.

Wood probably has a smallish line and itty bitty, slow WRs (that are coaches
on the field, run excellent routes, and have great hands...you know, really
cerebral players). Not saying he's better than Gilbert, but you have to
consider what he's working with.

They're probably more sig ep and delt than fiji.

From what I've seen and read about Gilbert, he's actually faster than Colt (who's a pretty darn fast QB). So the comments of Wood being faster than Gilbert is pretty eye-popping (meaning I'm not sure that's accurate).

BTW, is it some kind of inside joke that to play QB at Texas you need a name from a character in a Larry McMurtry novel?

Bobby Layne
James Street
Todd Dodge
Peter Gardere
Shea Morenz
James Brown
Major Applewhite
Chris Simms
Chance Mock
Vince Young
Colt McCoy
Garret Gilbert
Connor Wood

Let's compare that to NFL names:
Ben Rothlisberger
Tom Brady (kind of plain if you ask me)
Kurt Warner (does sound like a grocery sacker)
Joe Flaco
Jay Cutler
Kyle Boller
Marc Bulger

I think every father in this state names their son with the hope that eventually they'll play QB at Texas.

On the other hand, seems a plain named guy like "Duke" took Texas to a (m) NC. The other team had a Heisman winner on it.
