to the past Longhorn elite 8 teams. I can't get that Arkansas game out of my mind. That hog team was the biggest baddest team that year (90?). I can't even remember the year anymore.

Anyway, since we had the shooting edge outside with the BMW guys, but were totally outmatched inside, we stayed with them all of the way until the last three? minutes of the game.

I guess since we lost, I don't remember the details as well. I think Mays went up with a three-pointer for a chance to tie the game in the last couple of minutes.

Anyway, comparing that one-dimensional team to this extremely flexible team that can be absolutely dominant defensively, score from outside and inside, penetrate, and make jump shots, WOW! what a difference.

IMO, this team beats that team 8 times out of 10.

Now, what is similar is this Memphis team is basically the number one team in the country. I really think they're better than UNC, and if we get behind early in the second half, I'm pretty tempted to just put them on the foul line and earn it that way. Something tells me Barnes wouldn't go that route, though.

One other thought. Have we ever played a team with only one loss this late in the season? Answer has to be no.

2003 was our best elite 8 team and they beat very good Uconn and Michigan State teams to make it to New Orleans. But for Carmelo Anthony going off that team would have won it all. 2006 was a good team and caught a huge break when LSU upset Duke, who own us every time we play, if PJ makes a couple of free throws in regulation Texas gets to a second final four. But that 2006 team never seemed like a Final Four team and even needed a Paulino last second shot to get by WVU or we probably lose that sweet 16 game in OT. The 1990 team actually took the piggies to OT that year in Dallas but they were a streak team that got hot and Travis Mays was unreal in a couple of games which was the Penders MO shot a lot hope somebody got hot and if you are hitting you might just win. Arky sad to say was a much better team with fat boy Miller, Todd Day and Strollin Nolan's crew.

This years team is much better than 1990 and a little better than 2006. Will have to judge them against 03 based on how they do tomorrow.

All of that said this team has had an incredible season, no one would have thought Elite 8 at the beginning of the year and everything from the Sweet 16 on is just gravy. They can beat Memphis but it will be a heck of game.

I'm not sold that this is a better team than 2006. We would have a really hard time with that team. If Stanford presented matchup issues, what about the 2006 horns? Who is going to guard PJ Tucker? Then who would guard Aldridge and Buckman?

Gibson vs. Augustin - Gibson was a lock-down defender that year. He was also a streaky scorer. I would say advantage 2008 since Augustin controls the game better than Gibson.

Paulino / Abrams vs. Abrams - Mild advantage 2008 due to experience. Abrams is much better now, but Paulino gave 2006 team depth. Paulino has a better 3 pt % than Abrams this year for what it's worth.

PJ Tucker vs. Mason - Big Advantage 2006. Mason would have serious issues with PJ Tucker. We would probably have to go big and stick James on him. Tucker was a workman on the boards though.

Aldridge vs. James - Advantage 2006. This would be a fun matchup, but Aldridge would get the better of this matchup.

Buckman vs. Atchley - Even. Buckman was a better defender and rebounder. Atchley has a better outside game and probably has a better contributes to a better chemistry on the 2008 team.

Depth: Mild Advantage 2008. With Gary Johnson back, this team actually has pretty good depth - especially with the bigs. The ability to run James at the 3 and the interchange the 3 starting guards makes this team deeper than you would think. The 2006 team had really poor depth. Mike Williams, Dion Dowell, Atchley, and Abrams were not nearly as far along as their 2008 counterparts.
