Commuting from Giddings

Having lived in NYC since I graduated (98), I am finally moving back to Austin in a month or so. However, I am temporarily going to be living in Giddings,TX and commuting in to work (I'll be working near the 360 bridge).

Any thoughts on the commute? Anyone else live in or near Giddings and work in Austin? Just curious what I'm in for...

Wow, Giddings is FAR AS HELL!

It is basically the halfway point between Houston and Austin. DEFINITELY move as soon as you can. That much driving is insane.

Yes, it is further than Bastrop. Bastrop, on Hwy. 71 is halfway to La Grange. La Grange is about 20 miles south but inline of Giddings. So it is about 25 to 30 miles further.

You are looking at least an hour to hour and a half drive depending on where in Austin you are ending up for work. 290 is better than it was before but still not anything great to deal w/. You have several lights to contend w/ as well. Take our advice...move to Austin as soon as you can. There are some rent by the week rooms w/ stoves and fridge near the old Airport on Manor, just east of Airport. I stayed there when I first got back to Austin to avoid having to stay in La Grange and drive up while looking for a job. The drive gets old and quick.

Giddings won't be as bad because they finally finished all the construction on 290, once you reach Austin, get off 290, too many lights, 183 will be better,

I dont live in Austin now but my sister lives just east of Bastrop--and that is a 45 min drive to downtown Austin every day. Giddings then is at least a half hour FARTHER as I recall from one trip.

I had to commute from Austin to Giddings for a month in 1967. It was a boring 1 hour trip, whether by 290 or Bastrop.

Watch out for drunk drivers in Elgin, though - One pulled out in front of me & totalled my '67 Goat. Still pissed about that sumbitch.

Also, the speed limit through Paige and McDade is 55, but not many observe it.

The cops could make a good living from the violators, sort of like Selma 20 years ago.

That is going to suck. Boring drive and it is slow a good deal of the way. You should be able to get into a rythm where it doesn't bother you after a while though. The traffic won't be horrible until you get close to Austin

I commute to UT from the other side of Giddings about 10 mins further away from Austin). Summer school has absolutely sucked, but I am looking forward to the fall when I only go two days a weekl. It isn't that bed, just gotta get used to it.

Giddings about an hour away. My brother drives to UT every day and is way past Giddings. It is not that horrible of a drive though.
