Community Service Ideas ...

So I was detained by the law some months ago, and I have about 40 hrs of Comm Serv to spit out before the end of Oct.

For those on the board who have been there, what did you choose to do to complete the hrs? Anything out there that is different, interesting, not picking trash in an orange vest?

The site I was referred to has like only 6 options, and they all suck. If I come up with nothing I'll be sorting donated used wife beaters/jorts at my neighborhood Goodwill in 2 hr increments.

I need something I can do in the PM's, and maybe Sun mornings.

PS - Never get kicked out of a UT game for having booze, then buy another ticket and go back in. Not worth the trouble.

Wild Basin Preserve out on 360. Good healthy way to earn your time. Ends up being some domestic work and some trail work out on the trail. Sure beats seeing your neighbor at Goodwill.....

...unless you get bitten by a snake. That area is infested with Black Mambas. Some green Tree Mambas as well.

back in school i did some community service for the exact same reason. i worked at habitat re-store over on the east side.

Well I did spot a Texas Blue Mamba there one time

i do my community a service by getting kicked out of texas games for booze and then using another ticket as backup to reenter. then i smuggle in more booze.

I've known people who enjoyed doing their community service at the Austin Nature and Science Center, including that Houston judge that got busted for scalping Horn tickets on campus a few years ago.

I did community service in Atlanta at various outdoor events sponsored by the city like movies in the park, free concerts, etc. It was a good way to get it done and actually enjoy it at times. Maybe there are the same opportunities with the city of Austin?

marc:

Are they saying that any non-profit, charity donation making organization will do?

Some tailgates are non-profit and donate to charity. just sayin'.

i went from fire station to fire station and washed their trucks. chicks jogging by think you're one of them.

i did this back in high school. i had half days and when school got out there i was in nothing but cut-off jorts and sneakers cleaning ol' big red.

had to do 80 hours of community service once for a "youthful indiscretion". Consisted of raking the bunkers at a municipal golf course for 2 hours each morning. Got 8 hours credit for each day I was there. Cake.

Damn, some of you guys have it easy. I have a friend who is a probation officer. They don't give their guys choices, you get assigned. The only choice you get is do you want to work full days or half days at either orange vest trash detail or working at a recycling center sorting through glass, paper, plastic and metal on a conveyor belt with guys from the county jail.

You know you could always as to do your time in county for a weekend, I had like 70 hours and I asked to spend the weeknd in Del Valley, I got there Friday a 6pm and they were full so I got credit for the whole day and then I did the same thing on Saturday and It was full again so I got credit that day as well and showed up at 8am to sign out on Sunday and I was done. My buddy is a correction officer and he told me to do this, just make sure you do not get there before 6pm or you might just have to spend the weekend.

Try to volunteer at the Town Lake Animal Center.

I volunteer at a similar place in San Antonio when I have free time and I love it. Trust me, these types of organizations really appreciate the help.

Here is some more information if you are interested:

BH-- What does it take to qualify as "community service?" Find out if serving a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation will suffice, and if so, Greg and I will sign you up for a few hours this weekend, right across the parking lot from where you would be anyway.

PM me if you like.

Capital Area Food Bank

They have two events (though done for 2008) that make it easy - Reggae Festival and Chile Festival.

Their HQ is in the Congress/Slaughter area so kinda tough after work if you live North. Good Folks though, time will go quickly.

When I saw on the Channel 24 news scroll bar on TV a week or so back that News 36 anchor woman Michelle Valles got 2 years probation and 60 hours of community service, the first thought that came into my mind was how I could get her to mow my lawn. Alas, I am sure she can service the community in other ways that will still make her sweat and be far more enjoyable to both her and communital member.

I did volunteer work as part of a college class at the Salvation Army shelter downtown helping in their kitchen.

Since you're doing it for community service though they might put you someplace else, but I would definitely recommend it, its a good thing to help people who really need it and it may even give you a new insight on life like it did for me.
