Come Early; Be Loud; Stay Late

It's a Texas thing in words only. 15 minutes before kickoff the stadium is barely half full. Something really big must occur to raise the noise level. (Sometimes the godzillatron tells us too and we obey.) And the stands empty quickly when the game is decided, either in our favor or otherwise. But, at least we wear orange. I can remember when you could come to a UT game and see very little orange. We have that one nailed down good.

There are few schools do not have this problem. Chack out some pictures of OU's stadium and unless it is a big game, the student section is emptying just like ours do in the second half.

Give Texas fans a big time opponent, a reasonable game time and we stay and yell just like the SEC schools.

It's been four years since we had a big time OOC game- tOSU in 2006.

It's pretty pathetic when you have 50,000 enrollment and you can't fill the student section of the stadium the week after you beat Nebraska.

The loud part is a joke too, because there are too many ninny/pansy fans like the guy in sec 103 on the third row that kept yelling at the couple (guy&girl) in row one to sit down when they were cheering/yelling on 3rd down for ISU.

Now maybe if the stadium sold BEER you could get people to stay, just saying!!

The last two games I attended had substantially reduced the old college pre-game atmosphere (band, mascots, etc) and replaced with music over the PA. Even at OU, pre-game was rather annoying.

Also, I wish they would not play music for the kick-offs and just let the band and fans create noise. Just my 2 cents...

Like you msd... I noticed the stands were looking close to filled but the students section was wide open. I was trying to think of what holiday I was forgetting that would cause them to be out - on parents weekend too right?
I know it has been said before but all I could think about was too bad these tickets can't be distributed somehow when students aren't going to show.
Ugly game but who knew beforehand. Come on Horns get it up!

and by the way old-timer who came in 2nd quarter to claim his seat in sec. 31 -- Don't be wearing a Come Early; Be Loud; Stay Late T-shirt !

On the plus side, the place filled up much more than I thought it would. The attendance at kickoff is how I expected the whole game to be. I was also impressed that it got as loud as it did, which is not to say it was a loud game, just louder than I expected.

I don't see STUDENT tickets for sale on swap meet. I'm talking STUDENT tickets! Not season tickets here, but STUDENT tickets

the only time music should be played over loudspeakers is before the band gets to the stadium and after they leave. otherwise we can just put the fight song on tape and eliminate the band which would cut some spending thereby increasing profits. actually, im surprised belmont hasnt done that yet.

As you all know, I attended OU. However, my mom went to UT and she always told me that football was treated more like a golf tournament. Not only that, but since the campus is so massive, with student enrollment upwards of 50,000, the majority of the student body didn't even care about the games or the result.

And yes, this isn't unique to UT. OU has a similar problem, though I don't think it's as prevalent. It may be as bad, but since on-campus enrollment is half that of the UT enrollment, it doesn't 'seem' as bad. JMO.

UT has a large percentage of national and international students. Those people tend to care a lot less about football than the students who are from Texas, or other similarly football-crazy places.

As an electrical engineer, I can say that the percentage of international students was EXTREMELY high, and only a handful of EEs gave a darn about any UT sports.

It was actually quite sad-- on beautiful fall Saturday evenings, you could see my engineering building from the student section in the stadium. Almost every light in the building would be on. All of those geeks were in there studying or working on lab assignments. Sure, they ended up with much better GPAs than I did, but man, did they ever miss out...

I second the thoughts of theiioftx and longhorny630 re horrid canned music and the seeming diminishing role the band is relegated to play. It's disgusting, it mimics everyone else, and is impersonal. Moving the band to the end zone was the first step, where the acoustics are such that you can't hear them nearly as well as where they used to be, but hey, more money can be made for those seats and we all know where priorities lie now. Just very disappointing we would not be different.

Moving the band to the south end zone was done so that more. not less, fans could hear it. In the past fans from sections 29 thru 32 couldn't hear them at all and forget about the fans in the second level. I sit in section 13 across from where the band use to sit and the sound was indeed much better there, than it is now, but hey, thousands more fans can hear the band now that they are in the end zone, so I don't mind the sacrifice. And as far as making money on the seats...those are now student seats which are not big money makers.

And yet again thousands of fans leave before the game is over. I semi-understand the people leaving when A&M converted that 3rd down at the end, although I still don't see why it's going to hurt to stick around another 2 whole minutes to see if we get a chance for one last hail mary. Leaving with 3 minutes left after that last pick was just moronic.

Put a decent product on the field and folks will stay longer. I like being able to stretch my legs out and don't mind standing to see. I don't care if folks leave early or sit or stand or don't yell. This same lame BS comes up every game and has for as long as this board has been around.
