Colt and the career records

Last summer, the popular topic was "How easy will Colt make 4,000 yards and 40 TDs look?" Well, I'd at least like to focus on how close he is to the career passing records for Texas.

Total Passing Yards: 5699 (6th place)
Needs to tie...
5th: 341 (VY)
4th: 1398 (Simms)
3rd: 1697 (GOO)
2nd: 1939 (JB)
1st: 2654 (Major)
He'll easily accomplish this, barring injury.

He already holds the career passing efficiency rating, so unless he gets worse, he'll probably continue to lead it all time.

Victories: 19 (9th place)
Needs to tie...
8th: 1 (James Street)
7th: 3 (Major)
5th: 6 (JB and Gardere)
3rd: 7 (Simms and Marty Akins)
2nd: 9 (Bobby Layne)
1st: 11 (VY)
Again, with a wonderful season and barring injury, a tie with Vince is not out of the realm of possibility. I think worst case, he at least ties Layne for the 2nd most.

Starts: 26
Needs to tie...
4th: 8 (Layne and Stafford)
3rd: 10 (Akins)
2nd: 13 (JB)
I really don't think we're going to play the 15 games for him to tie Gardere. But JB's record is definitely there for the taking.

Passing attempts: 742 (5th place)
Needs to tie...
4th: 169 (Simms)
3rd: 261 (JB)
2nd: 283 (GOO)
1st: 323 (Major)
Again, barring even some kind of major injury, he'll probably pass this in about 10 games. Maybe less if our run game is no good.

Completions: 493 (5th place)
Needs to tie...
4th: 42 (Simms)
3rd: 53 (JB)
2nd: 68 (GOO)
1st: 118 (Major)
See the attempts comment... should easily get it, especially considering he completed twice that many last year.

TD Passes: 51 (4th place)
Needs to tie...
3rd: 2 (JB)
2nd: 7 (Simms)
1st: 9 (Applewhite)
Easy.

Total Offense: 6535 (6th place)
Needs to tie...
5th: 425 (Simms)
4th: 874 (Gardere)
3rd: 1514 (JB)
2nd: 1524 (Major)
1st: 2632 (VY)
I think this one is the most impressive, because he'll probably break it with room to spare, and might even do it in close to as many starts as Superman ever did it in. If Chiles becomes more of a threat, Colt's run game numbers might diminish, but not enough to keep him from breaking this one.

Regardless of how some see him, I think he's becoming more of a leader, and as soon as he gets the A&M chip off his shoulder, he's definitely going down as the top passing QB in UT history.

I think this is terrific, considering that I never expected him to be anything more than a placeholder for Jevan Snead.

Colt!

Did we really talk about 4000/40 last offseason?

Those are some crazy #'s and names that will pass this year.

I am looking for a more efficient year. Slightly higher compl% and fewer INT's. I am thinking 68-69% compl% and less than 10 INT's. Main thing with the INT's is to have just about zero against the non competitive teams. Granted he will have some new targets and they are not locked into one another yet so some missed reads and routes can be expected.

One thing many often underestimate is Colt's legs. He had about 500 yards rushing last season and 4 TD's as well. Thus even in a bit of a down season he had about 3800 yards of total offense and that was without a Big 12 title game under his belt. If he is more consistent and efficient and gets UT to a big 12 title game you do have to think a possibility of 3500 passing yards and 4000 plus total yards.

And he still has a year to go after that to add to every record.

I still remember a post by someone after a pre-season practice in 2006 predicting Colt would break every passing record at Texas and thinking that person was nuts. Great call.

UPDATECan't edit the post any longer, just adding on to what I already put. Changes are in bold.Total Passing Yards: 6532 (5th place)Needs to tie...4th: 565 (Simms)3rd: 864 (GOO)2nd: 1136 (JB)1st: 1821 (Major)He'll easily accomplish this, barring injury. Probably in about 6-7 games at this rate.

He already holds the career passing efficiency rating, so unless he gets worse, he'll probably continue to lead it all time. He'll shatter it at this rate.

Victories: 23 (6th place passing Major)

Needs to tie...
5th: 2 (JB and Gardere)
3rd: 3 (Simms and Marty Akins)
2nd: 5 (Bobby Layne)
1st: 9 (VY)
Again, with a wonderful season and barring injury, a tie with Vince is not out of the realm of possibility. I think worst case, he at least ties Layne for the 2nd most. Nothing to add, really.

Starts: 29

Passing attempts: 823 (5th place) (didn't change)

Needs to tie...
4th: 88 (Simms)

2nd: 202 (GOO)
1st: 242 (Major)
Again, barring even some kind of major injury, he'll probably pass this in about 10 games. Maybe less if our run game is no good. At this rate, it might take until the end of the season, but I anticipate a jump in attempts against teams like OU and Missouri.

Completions: 556 (3rd place), passing Simms and JB

Needs to tie...
2nd: 5 (GOO)
1st: 55 (Major)
See the attempts comment... should easily get it, especially considering he completed twice that many last year. Will beat Major during the CU game.

TD Passes: 62 (1st place!!)

Easy. Srsly easy!

Total Offense: 7562 (4th place, passing Simms and Gardere)

Needs to tie...
3rd: 487 (JB)
2nd: 497 (Major)
1st: 1605 (VY)

If Chiles becomes more of a threat, Colt's run game numbers might diminish, but not enough to keep him from breaking this one. Well, it looks like Chiles isn't quite going to be the run threat this year unless it's a blowout. I still find it amazing that a dude from Tuscola who was forced into starting early in his career can shatter this record, and possibly beat it in a similar time frame that VY set the record.

Regardless of how some see him, I think he's becoming more of a leader, and as soon as he gets the A&M chip off his shoulder, he's definitely going down as the top passing QB in UT history.

Career:
Colt, 7.34 yards/touch
VY, 7.8 yards/touch

It is possible that Colt will have 10,000 total yards by the end of this season. And about 90-95 TD's.

Here is my list, sorry for any redundancy, but I didn't feel like editing out sections.

Colt and the UT record book

Total Offense (season) - 1. Young 4086 2. McCoy 3795 (2007) Colt projects to have 4450 at his current pace (13 games)

Total Offense (career) - 1. 9167 Young 2. 8059 Applewhite 3. 8049 Brown 4. 7562 McCoy

Most TDs responsible for in a season - McCoy is on pace for 48 (13 games) current record 1. 38 Young 2. Maybe McCoy with 31 in 2006

QB rushing yards in a season - McCoy's pace is for 841 yards (13 games) which would put him in 4th place behind Young's 3 seasons and just ahead of Akins 777 (1975)

3000 Yard Passer 1000 Yard Rusher (season) Colt is on pace to pass for 3610 yards and rush for 841 over 13 games. He needs to average 81 yards a game rushing over 10 games to become the third player in NCAA history to achieve this record.

His number of touches should go up once we start playing tougher competition and find ourselves in closer games. Last year for example he average 5 more pass attempt and one more rush than he has so far this year. If his productivity in terms of yards per play stays about the same he will be flirting with the 400 total yard mark in nearly every game the rest of the year.

His attempts could go up even more than that. The Irby injury and poor rushing game should lead to more 4 wide sets, and more pressure on Colt to complete medium and short passes to make up for the lack of a running game.

While I used 13 games in my extrapolations above. If you use 14 and increase the number of touches using the same averages per play as last year for the remaining games you get a season with 4452 yards passing and 934 yards rushing. It's not likely, but it shows what kind of start he has had.
