Colorado Springs - Internship

I'm starting an internship at Colorado Springs (Schriever AFB) for this summer and was wondering if yall knew any good local food locales/must-see-do attractions?

I'll be living close to Peterson AFB, and the city doesn't look too big. Kinda excited to try something new.

Thanks!

Get the Colo Spgs/Pikes Peak Area tourist guide - it's full. I went to college there (many years ago) and know the main attractions reasonably well. Because it's been a long time, I can't advise you on dining highlights. But here are some of the worthwhile attractions:

(1) Pike Peak. You can drive to the summit or ride the cog railway. It's a breathtaking view and worth a day.
(2) USAF Academy - my alma mater. Check the website and you can find their schedule of events and see when there are parades and other ceremonies.
(3) Garden of the Gods. Intriguing rock formations - an easy drivethru tour.
(4) The Broadmoor - one of the nation's top resort hotels, very upscale. there used to be a great pub there - "Golden Bee," if I recall correctly.
(5) Canon City (about 90 minutes southwest of Colo Spgs) to see the Royal Gorge - world's highest suspension bridge.

Hope this helps.

A couple of nice drives:

1) Take Hwy 24 up through Manitou, Chrystola to Woodland Park, then around to Cripple Creek; then, take Gold Camp Road back into Colorado Springs. This is the old railroad bed (rails & ties removed) and is a relatively unspoiled and very beautiful drive. Allow plenty of time, because it's about 20 mph.

2) Take Hwy 24 to Buena Vista and then north to Hwy 82 and follow it up to Independence Pass. Unbelievable drive and great beauty.

3) A day trip to Vail (3 hours) or Boulder (Less than 2 hours) is nice.

4) If you go to Royal Gorge, consider going on to Monarch Pass. There is snow year round and you may get snowed on while up on the Continental Divide.

5) Should you decide that Estes Park is on your agenda, do not miss the opportunity to drive Big Thompson Canyon either going or coming.

As previously mentioned, all the local tourist sites are worth doing. Enjoy!

A few more:

Seven Falls (Hummingbirds are fantastic!)
The Zoo
Going to the Sun Road & the Will Rogers shrine
Cheyenne Mountain & NORAD
Ice Skating at the Broadmoor
Golf at the Broadmoor
Fly fishing (hire a guide if you don't know how or your friiends don't know where to go)
Church Service at the AF Academy
Pike's Peak Climb (Road Race)
Pike's Peak marathon (find out how good a shape you REALLY are in!)
The pubs in Manitou Springs
Cults (you will be surprised)
Aspen (go for a weekend if nothing else)
Denver (another weekend jaunt)

Have fun! I wish I was there instead of Florida, where it is 94 today with 98% humidity.

Ditto on all the above ... and they had a wonderful July 4 th celebraton when we were RVing there a couple of years back. Lawn chairs in the park (bring a blanket), great orchestra for July 4th music, cannons and fireworks. When CS is done you rotate around and look toward Pikes Peak where the next fireworks show begins.
