Colorado River Rafting?

A friend of mine and I are meeting up in Colorado sometime in August. While we're there, we want to go river rafting. This will be a first time for both of us.

I'm looking for some suggestions of where to go, guide info, etc. We will be staying just north of Boulder and would like to stay within 2 hours from there. Any info is helpful (prefer a link, if you've got one).

THANK YOU!

Alot of people go on the Arkansas River down near Buena Vista. We did it about 5 years ago and had a good time. Not sure how far that is from Boulder though.

August isnt the best time to go. Higher water in the spring/early summer is the best time, but there shoudl be something decent around. I hear the Royal Gorge is good that time of the year, but its too far away. The upper Colorado River would probably be your best bet where you are at.

Ive been to the Salmon River in July, best place I have been. Its farther north in Idaho so the water was still high.

Check out the town of Almont. It is between Gunnisson and Crested Butte. It is an awesome place for fishing on the Taylor river. But, the Taylor and the East Rivers come together here to form the headwaters of the Gunnisson river. I think there are several outfitters. Some cool little places to stay right on the river as well.

August is late in the season. The closest place to Boulder would be Clear Creek. It's a little over an hour from Boulder.

June is the best time to go. When I went to Clear Creek last July there were only 1 or 2 Class IV rapids.

I would recommend the Arkansas River (Royal Gorge). This is probably 3 1/2 - 4 hours from where your staying.

PM if you would like some more info.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, we can only go in August (b/c my friend is working on her masters) and because we're trying to save money, we're staying with my aunt and uncle right near Boulder.

However, we have decided to rent a car instead of using my aunt or uncle's cars, which means we'll have more free reign on where we can go. Still, we don't want to spend half of our trip there on the road. I've already seen just about everything in Colorado.

Too bad you can't come up here now because it's prime rafting season. August will be a little slower, but you'll still have a good time. If nothing else, you'll get out of that Texas heat and up into the cool mountains.

PM if you have any questions before your trip.

Thanks, 5280. I may PM a couple of you before we go, just to get some last minute tips/ideas.

I've been to CO about 10+ times and have gone all over that state. However, it's been about 5 years since I last went. My friend and I are really looking forward to it!

CO - I think we are going to do Clear Creek. It's not far at all and inexpensive, too. We're also going to try and hike and maybe even do some hang-gliding while we're there. My relatives used to live at the foothills in Boulder and we'd often sit on the patio in the morning and watch people hang-glide. I've wanted to try it every since.

By the way, how is Pearl Street Mall looking now? The last time I was there, it seemed to be getting too commercialized. I don't like that.

Pearl Street Mall has changed a lot in the past 5-10 years. There are still some pretty good local restaurants to check out, but you also have the Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, etc. I prefer some of the restaurants on Walnut Street. When it gets closer PM me if you would like some recommendations.
