I want to get out of here as fast as I can, my grades suck *** so UT is not an option. I want to move to Austin so bad and I have to go to college. So what are some other options?
Seriously, B.O., think SWT. People like to rag on it and all but it is a great school, moreso lately. They have improved alot in many areas and are even developing some grad programs. They may be changing their name too in order to hopefully shun some of the party school reputation they have rightfully earned. They are loaded with hot women too and it is a nice little town right down the road from Austin.
If you have really sucked it up and cannot transfer there right off, give Austin Community College a looksie. They transfer direct to SWT and to UT (more times than not). Being a state resident you get a bit of a break and after a year you get the Austin resident status and it is cheap as hell then. You will be prepared then for wherever you go. There are tons of UT students there as well who want to avoid the huge auditorium type classes (like English, Governments and such).
Your finding a place to stay will not be that hard either since the market is much more friendly than just a couple of years ago. There are For Rent signs all over the place w/ them offering things like free rent and stuff like that. Some places are even dropping their rents trying to keep tenants and fill empty apartments. If you are serious about this, there is no better time to do it than the current one.
Good Luck and keep us informed if you need help or advice. Oh, check w/ Scally. He may let you crash at his place.
another college is Southwestern University in Georgetown(where I am going next year), but its just as hard if not harder to get into than UT, so if your grades are bad it might not be an option.
on SWT, they are have thing like set standards and if you meet them you get in, like if you have a certain class rank and you have this GPA you get in kind of stuff. I have a few friends and both my neighbors go there and they both like it.
I've had internships in Atlanta, London, and Houston, in addition to growing up in KC/Houston. It's amazing how much I've learned to appreciate Lubbock. We've got all the facilities/conveniences of a large city, without the crime/traffic/pollution/etc...
If you're an outdoorsman/hunter, Lubbock is as good a location as anywhere else in TX. 2nd largest canyon in the US is 1.5 hrs to the north, hiking/skiing is 2-3 hours west, bird hunting is everywhere, Lake Alan Henry is 1.5 hrs east.
If you're into music, in the past two years we've snagged Brittany Spears, Elton John, Dixie Chicks, Chicago, Alan Jackson, Matchbox 20, Everclear, Don Henley, etc... in addition to a plethora of talented Lubbock musicians.
In all honesty, attending one of the largest major research institutions in the southwest should leave you with plenty to do. Museums (will soon be getting the Vatican Art Exhibit, Lubbock is the only place in the world this art can be seen other than the Vatican Museum), lectures, clubs, student organizations, intramural athletics (highest percentage of students competing, among Tech, UT, A&M, and Baylor), the renovated/expanded rec center (2nd largest in the Big XII), Tech is currently building what we hope will be the #1 collegiate course in the nation, etc...
BigOrange - you say you're sick of sitting around drinking beer with your buddies. So go do something else! Join a club and meet other people with similiar interests. I hate to tell you, but it's the same at any college you go to. Are you a part of the Gateway Program, or are you exclusively a SPC student? If you're just at SPC, that could be part of the problem.
During my freshman year I contemplated a transfer as well. I spent the entire year with my head up my girlfriend's ***, and when we broke up I didn't have jack to do. I decided to stick around though (the scholie money spoke loudly, I must admit) and tapped the various University resources (that includes Chitwood, Stangel, etc...
) that are available. I've had the best time of my life.
I'd encourage you to stick it out. Get creative with how you spend your time, it can only help you grow intellectually, spiritually (not to be confused with religeously), and socially. The opportunities are there for the taking.
Dolemit, I was born in Lubbock, lived in Arlington for three years, moved back in sixth-grade, and have been here ever since. Also, Lubbock isn't nearly as cool as the vacation booklet you got that **** from says it is. Intermural sports? Give me a break. Lectures? You tell me of any lectures outside of Tech and I will **** my pants, If you dont go to Tech you can't enjoy any Intermutal sports, or the Rec Center, or those clubs. Yes getting the Vatican Art is cool, and I cant wait to see it, but have you ever been to that museum? Its not very good, and they don't update that often. Or if they do they don't tell anyone about it. If you don't like to hunt than I guess you are **** out of luck. Music. All those bands that you said suck. The only good bands to ever come to Lubbock are Bowling for Soup, 311, Bush, Carlines Spine, Saliva, and HED P.E. Britney Spears? Do you actually want to see that ****? And why are you defending lubbock so much? It doesn't appeal to BigOrange cause none of that **** you said appeals to him. He thinks lubbock sucks, you think its cool. God only knows why. But lets leave it at that.
As I said - if I grew up here I'd want to get out as well. Luckily, I've had the opportunity to see the rest of the US and much of the world. That has tempered my patience and acceptance of the city. IMO it's a great place to spend 4-5 years while getting an education.
Dude - get out of Lubbock. Many of my friends from high school ventured off to Tech. Don't think any ever graduated as they ended giving up or moving to Austin. Since graduating in 86 the Army has moved me all over the world. The words I fear the most when I get to a new location are "if you hunt and fish you'll love this place" That is code for there aint **** to do here.
Pack the car, move to Austin. ACC is a great way to get your basic classes out of the way, get your GPA up.
HORN_FAN, does ACC and UT have some sort of gateway program? You know if you take these certain classes and make a certain GPA you can get into UT. I know Texas Tech and South Plains College do this, and I am curious to know if ACC and UT have some sort of deal like that.
misplaced, there's no such program between UT and any college/university. The advisors at ACC can help you schedule classes that transfer to UT, but getting into UT would be up to you.
I can answer this for you, Misplaced. Yes they do. They even have the unique numbers/class numbers translated for you according to the degree plan at UT. Pull the form and you will have your guide for the EXACT class you need that will transfer. Many UT students routinely take courses at ACC during the regular semesters and esp. during the summer. It is so much cheaper and classes are alot smaller.
Each college has its own standards regarding GPA and such but it is pretty safe to say that if you have a 3.25 or higher you are in good shape. I know many people that had a 3.0 or 3.1 and got in and some higher that did not. Weird. If you are considering the Business School, however, you better crack the books and get as high a GPA as you can. It is very competitive.
Alot of the hotties at ACC, besides from being current students at UT, are the party girls that have to shape up to get back in. They still like to party though. That said, there are many good chances w/ cuties there. B.O., if you have the chance to do the ACC to UT route and opt to stay in Lubottocks, you are an Aggie.
Its been 16 years since I graduated, but I remember my advisor pushing ACC for the basics, Gov't, US History and language. They transferred the credits for me and the GPA from ACC did not affect my UT GPA. I also remember that my ex-wife who was not a Texas resident could not get directly into UT. She took classes at ACC for one year, maintained over a 3.0 at ACC. She was readily accepted into UT the next year. My advise would be to contact the student advisor/counselors in the college you are interested in at UT. They can advise you better on how to transfer. Different colleges have different standards, especially Business. May want to forum shop colleges like Liberal Arts just to get in and then change colleges once you're in. Good luck..
go talk to the admissions people at UT. talk with the higher ups there, the folks that pull a lot of weight. give them a convincing reason why they should let you in. if you work it right, you can get them to set-up a contract for you i.e. take a certain number of classes at acc and pull a certain gpa and you are in. it can be done.
Dolemite, you need to face the fact that Lubbock sucks. I grew up in a small town south of Lubbock before leaving the South Plains for Austin, and I would never, ever move back to that part of the state. The hunting and fishing of the area are often mentioned by Lubbock natives, but they aren't particularly good. The only nice thing about the South Plains is the proximity to New Mexico and Colorado.
In fairness, it doesn't matter where you live as long as you're willing and energetic enough to create your own entertainment. I'm currently living in a part of the state that many would consider undesirable (the Valley), but it's a fine place to live if you take up some hobbies and hunt down people who share similar interests. The same attitude would make Lubbock a bearable place to live..
