It doesn't say who our "rivals" are, Kansas is probably in there because they won a game one time you know so instant rivalry

Here's the source, which doesn't explain much. There are two tables, one titled "Most Rivals per Team", and the other "Rivals to Most Teams".

My guess is the first table asks "How many rivals do you claim to have?", whereas the second is "How many schools claim to be your rival?" It takes two to tango, so the tables should be identical, but that's not always the case. For example, Baylor might claim us as a rival, but we wouldn't claim Baylor as a rival.

That's the whole point of the author. That UT is perceived by the most schools in college football as their "rival". It has less to do about who we perceive as our rival. So, BU (as an example) might see UT as their rival, but of course, not visa-versa. Being hated does not seem to be important or a criteria. But, I think any long-term Longhorn fan pretty much knew this already.

Tim McGraw has a song called Everyone Hates Me. About being the boss and getting to the top of the Mtn, then everyone hates you. That is UT.

I'm not sure the comparison is 100% accurate, but I've told others for years that IMO UT football is the NY Yankees of baseball.

We both have many fans far and wide but we both have many haters that want to see us lose to their team or anyone we play.

ND is also much like this.

11? That's hilarious. Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU at least can somewhat reasonably say "Texas is our rival" even if we wouldn't necessarily use that word to describe it in some cases. Whoever the other 5 fanbases are, they are completely kidding themselves.

Which sport? Kansas in basketball, Rice in baseball, etc

To my mind, to say that two given teams are rivals would suggest that they are somewhat equal or evenly matched over time. That’s obviously not the case with many of these teams. They. Just. Don’t. Like. Us.
