College Majors That Are Useless

aggy gets three of the top five most useless degrees. Congratulations! Now, that's something they can be proud of.

1. AGRICULTURE
2. Fashion design
3. Theater
4. ANIMAL SCIENCE
5. HORTICULTURE

And with regards to #4, just remember..."baa" means no.

Here's one I think is totally useless. Belmont University (Nashville, TN) offers a Songwriting Major. In my opinion, when it comes to songwriting, you either have it or you don't. It's sad when a college/university will offer kids degrees in fields like this.
 
So, according to that poll, there is very little need for persons knowledgeable in farming methods and vet skills. I agree with the above poster. When I think of useless and silly majors women's studies and crap like that come to mind.
 
useless to whom? If somebody wants to become really knowledgable about womens' history and sociological trends or how the physiology is different, etc., then can the major be useless to them?

I suspect the author is saying something is useless if it does not lead directly to money. Which is par for the course in a society that has no other values to speak of.

So I guess we should have pornography majors, because there is a lot of money to be made there right now; same for manufacturing and distributing meth. And how useful could it be to major in creating entertainment with tons of gratuitous violence and brutal sex? Must be lucrative because the trailers at the movies don't show much else.

Useless? I ran my father's business for a year when I was in high school because he was in the hospital. When I went to college a few years later I took some business courses and dropped all of them because they weren't teaching anything I hadn't learned running a convenience store in small town Texas. Those guys at McCombs are pursuing a useless major? I don't think so. It is real useful to people who want to study it and not so much for people like me.

And I don't think people who are pursuing studies in ballet or art or english or women's studies are either---if they like what they are studying and their studies help expand the range of their intellects.
 
Not really in to violence or brutal sex, but I do have a degree in Porn. Perhaps you've seen some of my work.

Useless to society? Having a huge number of people who have disciplined themselves to learn a field in detail is useless unless they can get a job doing just that?

We all pay taxes and last I heard we did not allot the benefits of society just to people who paid a lot of them.

Until the last few decades hardly any women who got educations worked outside the home. They raised the kids and managed households. That is useless because they were not working in their fields.

It takes a blinkered view of society to think that something is useless unless it leads directly to employment.
 
First, hardly anybody is occupying parks; you just see some of them on television. That is not reality.

And having well educated people doing things they were not specifically trained to do is a form of cross training and can be real valuable. Almost every good lawyer I know trained as an undergraduate in some other field. It pays off.

And if you want to talk about useless, how about ministers? They are poorly paid, don't do anything that generates a profit, etc. But I don't think even most non believers think they are useless or that their field of study is useless.

People who put a price tag on everything and judge all by money are missing out on a lot in life.
 
Almost ALL college majors are useless. It used to be that a high school diploma was a benchmark and now it is a graduate degree. It shouldn't be that way, but it is for a lot of people.
