College Grads and Seniors

Many polls show some of Obama's greatest support comes from college aged students and senior citizens.

College debt is at an all time high and a large percentage of college graduates cannot find work after they graduate.

Senior citizens, who typically live off of social security and interest on savings have seen their SS frozen and it will not be sustainable over the long haul. Couple that with less than 1% earnings on savings, 2.32% inflation and the Fed taking action that will continue to de-value the dollar. They lose net worth every day he is in office.

Why in the world would either of those two demographics want four more years of Obama?

I think recent college grads will vote obama because they're typically more liberally-aligned the younger they are, and the rumblings in the media about obama's potential to stir the pot with student loan debt forgiveness should help pull on the emotional strings.

As for the elderly, they're easily persuaded when they feel a threat. Obama has been crafty and successful in demonizing Romney with vitrolic stump speeches, getting them to believe that Romney is going to steal their SS checks from them, facts be darned. I visited my very-with-it, very healthy 93 year old grandmother a few weeks ago at her retirement village south of Denver, and while having dinner with her friends, sat back and listened as they spoke of this very thing. The threat of possibly losing stability in their late years overcomes some of their overt conservative attitudes.

That's just my $.02.

The young and the old need the government the most. If the GOP wants to get serious with either demographic, they need to stop demonizing government help/entitlements and come up with serious reforms to address those concerns. Nursing home folks don't care about devaluing currency and inflation.

The whole "I built that" thing just doesn't ring true with either group. Chances are, neither of them built jack.

You don't think old people in this country ever built anything? You think old people are selfish and don't want their grandchildren to have the same opportunities?

You think young people are so stupid they'll just vote for Obama knowing he can't find them a job?

"You don't think old people in this country ever built anything?"

I think what they built isn't the same as what's built today. Even if there are octogenarians out there who built businesses, they did so under a different set of values and regulations. I'm sure many of them understand this.

"You think old people are selfish and don't want their grandchildren to have the same opportunities?"

No, I think they want grandchildren to have better opportunities. Who wouldn't? But they also want what's coming to them, which isn't selfish. It's fairness. Medical care and SS is only part of the issue.

"You think young people are so stupid they'll just vote for Obama knowing he can't find them a job?"

It's not Obama's responsibility to find anyone a job, let alone recent college grads. I think they'll vote for him because of the absence of a GOP plan, which I didn't make as clear in my OP.

"Chances are even better, you don't know Jack, or how to build."

Even if you disagree with me, it doesn't mean you're right about the election. Meany.

At least we agree that the democrats are for an entitlement based society. For example, saying that college kids are decimated by college costs.

A resident of Texas can get a four year degree including books, tuition, housing and expenses for under $88,000. Is this at Rice, no.

Picking up even a minimum wage job and living within your means cuts the debt you could accrue by 75%, provided you have never worked a day in your life mowing grass or flipping burgers to save money for school. A $22,000 debt is well worth the earning power of a degree in demand. This is key. If you study something not in demand, please do not borrow a single cent to go to college.

Until we get real leaders in the US who are not pandering for votes, we will eventually- and very soon- be bankrupt.

As the baby boomers overwhelm the system by paying in one quarter of what they take out, anyone counting on Medicare or social security without major overhaul is simply a fool.

However, at least their candidates will be in office. And all the kids will be "cool" as they sleep in their old bedrooms in their parent's house.

Half of America's life savings disappeared under George W. Bush's watch. Guys like Mitt who ran AIG et al had a large hand in this. Mitt has done very little to help himself overcome this perception; quite the opposite. He just wants everybody to trust him in how he will fix things and not worry about whatever he's hiding in his tax returns and vote for him. He needs to get real or go back to country club life.

Turd sandwich at least understands economics and his vice president also understands. While douche will continue to be a community organizer, give hand outs for votes and continue to devalue the dollar, turd sandwich proposes stopping it.

I guess your apathetic approach of letting someone else worry about it later or voting for someone who has less chance of getting elected than Charles Manson is the answer?

The numbers I quoted included all of what you mentioned. I know many who worked full time in college including myself. It affects your ability to compete when classes grade on a curve, but it does not necessarily take away from your ability to learn. In fact, it prepares you better than those who have the luxury of not working while taking class.

It also does not take into account that many are able to attend a school near home where they can continue to live with parents/family. It also does not take into account the ability to earn scholarships etc.

The Dems are offering to forgive debt on college, mortgages, credit cards, etc. it gets votes, but does not solve problems.

If I was in college, my priority would be to create an economy where I can get a job, not whether my elected official is for gay rights or other social issues that really have no place in government.

I have an accounting degree from UT. Two of my roommates also earned accounting degrees from UT. All three of us worked full time while we were in school. One roommate doubled with a finance degree.

Intermediate accounting was especially a *****.

Simply google college costs in Texas. I prefaced my post that it was not Rice. I know plenty of successful people from SFA, Sam Houston and Southwest Texas (Texas State).

Maybe I did frame it wrong on my post, but the premise is the same. The current President has done very little if nothing for these two demographics, yet they remain as two of his most loyal voting blocks.
