Coffee makers

The recent thread about coffee roasting inspired me to purchase a new coffee maker.

I need something convenient and quick, so that rules out other, more flavorful methods of brewing coffee. And I'd also like something that makes my coffee slightly warmer than the surface of the sun. Really I need something that will provide a superior taste to the regular Mr. Coffee. Any suggestions?

For quick, go braun. Fastest out there. It keeps the reservoir hot, so it fills an entire pot in less than two minutes.

I guess I'm looking for a coffee maker with the best flavor. Speed is not that critical. I just don't have enough time in the morning for a french press or something comparable.

the problem with the average drip coffee maker (mr coffee, etc) as i understand it (admittedly from more reading than experience, but that is rapidly changing) is that they only heat the water to around 185 f (instead of near boiling) and don't allow the coffee to steep long enough. there are at least two drip machines with heated carafes that are up to snuff. one is the technivorm

i have always used a mr coffee type brewer, but on friday i'm expecting some goodies along with my coffee staple from sweetmarias to simplify and improve my brewing. my plan is to eliminate the all-in-one, annoying to clean, and slow mr coffee with more versatile components:

- a separate water heater that will boil water fast for uses other than, though primarily for coffee: bodum electric kettle

- a decanter that eliminates the need for a hot-pad carafe, is easier to clean, and is portable: zojirushi vacuum bottle

- a simple, easy to clean brewing system:filter cone

anyway, that's my latest system. pour really hot water through a slow filter + fresh roast == a really good cup.

best coffee I've ever made comes from this: Chemex Coffee Makers

I don't use it too much because it takes a little longer to brew even than a melita manual cone filter, but it really is better.

For everyday coffee I use a Krups, but I'm not 100% happy with it...

I have a Cuisenart grind-n-brew. It grinds whole beans and has a water filter in it so that you use the freshest coffee and water that is more pure. It makes great coffee.

Ahh yes, the venerable filter cone.

I got one a few months back because making a pot of coffee meant two things:
a) going to waste
b) me being wired all day

BTW, you can pick up a filter cone at HEB for around $1.50 and pocket the change.

I have the cool vacuum system thing from Bodum. Pretty easy to use (although cleanup is more of a hassle than paper filter types). It makes damn good coffee, entertains your guests who want to watch it brew, and looks great on your counter.

Coffee is supposed to be brewed at around 185-187 F. Brewing coffee with boiling water results in burned coffee, the same kind of taste you get when you let the pot sit on the warmer too long. If you like that taste, then you're fine. But most people who care about the taste of coffee will not drink such crap.

For drip coffee makers, Braun should be a fine choice. Most of the major brands should be fine and should perform similarly.

of course you don't brew in boiling water - you get it near a boil, ideally around 200 F. that is the problem with most drip brewers. but if you like it that way, by all means continue.

I got a decent coffeemaker for free through that Gevalia gift offer thing. Order 1 lb. of coffee, get free coffeemaker, cancel membership - that's it. Been using it for a year now and it's better than the Mr. Coffee I had previously.

Lot of good research to be done here- The Link

Last cofeemaker I bought was a $70 Braun KF580. It's o.k.- probably on par w/ the Mr. Coffee it replaced- though the Mr. had a few more timer functions- and beeped when the coffee was done. The Braun does a nice a job- and looks good on the counter.

Holy crap coffee geek is a great website! I've been looking for a new grinder and thinking about a new maker... Great to have all the info in one place.

i dont make much coffee at home

only a few cups on the weekend because I usually wait till I get to work to get coffee during the week

We bought one of those pod coffee makers. It makes 1-2 cups at a time and its easy to use.

It doesnt make the best coffe in the world...but its better than than drip maker we had. Plus its super fast

I got a Melitta Grind and Brew and love it, and have since bought one for my parents as well.

The real trick to any coffee maker is to use a metal filter instead of paper if at all possible. This allows the oils from the beans to get into you cup instead of remaining in the filter. The oil is a large part of a great cup of coffee.
