Coaching Roulette

Been confirmed that Deb Patterson has been "fired" at Kansas State. Kamie Etheridge, currently the assistant coach, has been appointed as interim head coach until a new head coach can be hired. Wonder who they will go after?

Any other Big 12 coaches on the "hot seat"?

Arkansas fired their coach.

Freshman, Jessica Jacskon had a tremendous firs year in Fayetteville. She signed with Arkansas last Spring after also visiting Texa A&M and Texas. If she wants to transfer, I sure hope we pursue her.

She definitely had a great frosh season for the Razorbacks; 16 pts/6 rbs/1.5 blks/1.3 asts per game. She also made 48 treys and shot .384 from BTA. FT % was .804 and FG% .423. She's from Arkansas though so wonder if she is really looking to go anywhere else. If not, she'll provide a good foundation for the new coach to build upon.

Patterson's homophobia apparently didn't work out so well for her. She made it clear she didn't want lesbians in her program and her program fizzled. So sad.

Seems like Patterson has had some really small (quantity) rosters the last few years. From the outside looking in, it seemed as if she couldn't even give away scholarships.

Really surprised Kamie Ethridge continued as an assistant coach under Deb all these years.

I tried to google it but everyone just dances around it. I thought Deb and Kamie had more than a professional relationship. But the appointing of Kamie as the interim head coach and the fact that Deb was conducting forced bible studies is throwing me off.

So, if Deb is gay, especially if she and Kamie have a romantic relationship, why would she mind having gay players on her team? That seems to be somewhat inconsistent.

As far as Kamie taking the interim position, she still has to eat. If Deb still wants to coach, maybe Kamie will go with her. If they do have a romantic relationship, it could make the future interesting for both of them.

I, for one, would like to see how Kamie would do as a head coach. Maybe Deb could be her assistant.

With each passing season, with each following horror story, with each passing televised incident with the "attack poodles" at Norman and Waco, I can't help but wonder if we have ever truly grasped what Jody Conradt was for us? No one has ever wanted to win more than her. But what an incredible ambassador she was, not just for Texas, and for women's basketball.....but just as a stand up person. I am sure that at times she may not have the most lovable person to deal with! But I would think as a parent, I would have no qualms about turning my child over to her for four years.

Just an observation from a Conradt lackey who thinks Coach can do no wrong.

It's official - 5 year deal. Go to KSU website. Wow. I thought TCU was poised to rise in the Big 12. Interesting development.

I wouldnt agree that its bad taste to poach a rival coach if it could improve your program. But I understand those who would feel that way. IMO this is a lateral movement at best with KSU. Because in the coming two years TCU is going to be a force, depending on who they hire (and I think they can get a really good Asst from a top program. Look for names like Bill Brock, Richa Patterson, and Kelly Bond or a really good mid major coach.

I guess I don't know too much about the current landscape. I would have thought TCU would be a bigger coaching opportunity than KSU. Or certainly on a par with them at any rate. Not exactly the kind of move you would expect from someone looking to make a step up in their career.

KSU hires TCU's Mittie

At $325 thousand a year, I do believe that's a bit over half of what Patterson was pulling down. Wonder what he was making at TCU? I don't consider moving from one Big 12 team to another, coaches or players, to be in bad taste. It happens a lot. For example, Coach Aston moved from Texas to Baylor in a lateral move. Among the coaches people here were looking at before Coach Aston was hired were the OU and BU coaches. Players do move between schools, although not much.

I don't know that Mittie made any more than a lateral move other than KSU has a better history in WBB than TCU and far better current fan support. It will be interesting to see how he is received by both KSU players and fans and what his reception is when KSU plays TCU, especially at Ft. Worth.

Not in the Big 12 conference but another coaching change: Teresa Witherspoon is out as La Tech HC. Hope it's okay to post a link to a forum that is following any and all coaching changes:

Re: the Mittie move, I read there is some grumbling at TCU that he bailed to a school in the same conference and interviewed and accepted a new position while his team was still involved in post season play (WNIT). Not cool.

Depends on your point of view..

poor taste if your a player on the team losing the coach
good taste if your the coach

I agree, to coach against the kids you recruit is a bit tacky.

As much as we want to remember they they're student athletes. We also have to note that this is a business, and sometimes people (usually coaches) get a bad wrap for treating it as such. If the google CEO went to work for Yahoo, would we bat an eye? Probably not. And depending on the program, you're always going to coach against kids that you recruit if you recruit the best. Mittie got more $ and more tradition rich program. Kudos to him for what he did for the TCU program, and for putting himself and his family in what HE FELT LIKE was a better position. This could be a win win for all involved because Mittie has shown that he can do more with less, and if TCU hires someone that can come and light a fire under the program TCU could be a sleeping giant

nice post, utfann.
still find it hard to understand that some don't understand that this is a business, and as in any business, moving on is a strong possibility, as is coaching against your old school, and hence, against players you recruited.

Sounds like a good move for Mittie. Nice raise, move way closer home. Now, he has to produce in order to keep the job. It will be interesting to see if any players transfer and how he changes the way that KSU is used to playing. That certainly was a major factor in the losing season that Coach Aston had in her first year here. But look at the turnaround after a year.
