Coaches Poll is Out: Texas #21

From the list found at the link above:

8. Miami (Fla.) (10-3)

Points: 1,091. Previous ranking: 13. Opens: Sept. 2 vs. No. 24 LSU in Arlington, Texas (ABC, 7:30)

Anyone doubt that Texas is still putting out the best prep football talent in the country? Miami plays LSU in Arlington, TX for an unofficial recruiting visit.

The last time I can recall Texas doing anything remotely like this was playing Penn State at the Meadowlands, probably more of a home game for PSU and to help their recruiting in that area; for Texas, not so much.

As someone who was at the game at The Meadowlands, I believe we outnumbered the State Penn fans.

Great day by the way. Before the game, Akers told me I had never seen a team that slow. When you burn a team with long runs by Orr and Robinson, you know they must be the slowest team in D-1.

Think the final score was Horns 28-3 or something similar.

Gawd I loved that game and the way the Horns disemboweled the natty lions / JoPa that day. Think TE Lawrence Sampleton had a catch with a long run for a TD.

Horns had speed to burn against those big slow kids!

I went to that game. I had just moved to Washington, D.C at the time, and actually drove up there in my 1982 Olds Delta 88 (diesel).

1984. "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times."

Presaged by 1983, No. 3 Texas goes to No. 5 Auburn early. Got a guy called Bo Jackson. Texas wins 20-7 with War Eagles/Tigers' Jackson finally scoring one TD with about 1 minute to go in the 4th. Auburn had 2 first downs and 51 total offensive yards by half. Jackson got about 30 yards for the game, and said: "I feel like I've been stamped by a herd of cows."

Then 1984. No. 4 Texas hosts No. 11 Auburn, takes it 35-27. This game, however, was famous for that takeout tackle of Jackson (but clean, even according to Bo) by one Mr. Jerry Gray, DB Emeritus-UT Austin , ending Bo's 1984 season with a separated shoulder.

The next week was the PSU game in the Meadowlands, #2 Texas dominates PSU 28-3.

Next week polling #1, Texas beats Rice.

Then, that absolutely miserable OU game in the old Cotton Bowl, No. 1 Texas, No. 3 OU, rainy, slippery turf, comes down to the last seconds near the goalline, neither team able to get traction on that crappy floor, down 3 points, Akers turns to Jeff Ward (PK): "What do you think?, ... Ward: "I say we kick it and get the hell out of here." Or something like that. 15-15. Ugh.

Over the next 8 games, Horns go WWWLWLLL, two wins over #14 SMU and #12 TCU, losses to UH, Baylor, aggy, tumbling down to #19, then, kind of like the OU game, but a loss this time, to an unranked team, a miserable rainy night in the Freedom Bowl, no one wanted to be there, Iowa smashes Texas 55-17.

"It was the best of times. It was the worst of times."

Oh, P.S. by the way I looked at the 1984 and 1985 Horns rosters. 1984 summarized above, but no Eric Metcalf. Horns look great in New Jersey against PSU early 1984. A frosh on the squad 1985: Eric Metcalf from Arlington, VA, son of perennial NFL all-pro Terry Metcalf.

Maybe Sabre knows if there was some effect of that game on Eric leaving the eastern seaboard to go all the way down to Austin?

Pay Dye was such a nice host that day. Let Bo Jackson touch the ball six times, and that midget RB (something James??) touched it 20+.

As Sabre correctly noted it was a 50/50 crowd (70/30 after halftime). The only comparison I can make with regard to PSU's team speed is, think of how OU would expose Nebraska's vaunted "Black Shirt" defenses year after year after year after year. Start 10-0, then get embarrassed by OU and then the bowl game.

Big. Slow, No neck. Corn fed. White boys.
