Coaches pick Horns 5th

Dream on. TX has no experience at PG. Bill Fennelly and the awful Deb Patterson can coach, unlike Aston. TX will be duking it out again with TCU for last in conference. Minor upgrade in talent, continued incompetence in charge. 8th in conference strikes me as realistic, but 10th is not out of the question.

Hopefully it will be better, but we have a long way to go. Arguments about Aston's coaching seem pointless to me. We won't know how good she is until we watch her handle better personnel. Texas doesn't have a coaching problem right now. We have a personnel problem. You won't win much when you average 57 points a game in the Big 12. The reason we couldn't score was because the guards couldn't shoot, period. Rodrigo, our starting point guard, played over 30 minutes a night and averaged 1.8 points a game. Her three-point percentage in Big 12 play was 000%. Brady Sanders was .150 from beyond the arc, Davenport .269, Chassidy Fussell only .263. Those are terrible percentages. Fussell ran herself ragged for 35 minutes a game, closely guarded---because opponents could sag off UT's other guards and let them throw up bricks. Our team three point percentage was .256, dead last in the Big 12. TCU, in ninth place at .309, was over 50 points better! (The top five league teams all averaged over .325. ) We weren't great at mid range jumpers, either. Rodrigo shot .264 from the field; Sanders .266; Fussell .373; Davenport .419. They should be better this year, because they're all a year older; but its not realistic to expect all those players to turn into good shooters. Davenport probably has the most potential. Ashley Roberts was hurt for most of Conference play, but for the year she averaged 41% from beyond the arc. It should help to have her back on the court. I think a huge factor is whether the newcomer, Henderson, provides a scoring lift at the point. In junior college her three point percentage was 35.2%, which is way better than our guards shot last year. If she can be an outside threat, she will open defenses up. That will help everybody, especially our big girls, who have to struggle against packed-in zones now. Our incoming Frosh include three front line types and one true guard who doesn't have a reputation as an outside scorer, but we shall see. If any of them contribute, that will help, too.

Yeah I would have to agree w/Dr. D. I've said the last few years we haven't had anyone that's a baller. We always have a lot of role players but no one with a killer instinct.

I think preseason #5 is agressive but I'll take it. I think it will be another lllloooonnnnngggg season for our Horns.

I also think Baylor will surprise a lot of people. OSims is a BEAST!! She's a BALLER!! She's a senior and wants another championship. She saw it snatched out of their hands last year. THINK REVENGE! BG is gone and now she will be in the spot light. Watch her WORK!!

Cynt, I dont know if I agree with Baylor being a player on the National stage. I see them being a factor in the B12 race, but beyond second round in the NCAA tournament would be them exceeding my expectations. O Simms is a fantastic player, but im not so sure that she's a "put the team on her back and carry them to victory" type of player when the other teams can make her the focal point of their defense. Its one thing to be able to rely on a team full of seniors and the perennial player of the year. But its a whole different show when its just you..........

Not going to judge after one year, but usually a measure of a good coach is if the same players perform better under new coaching compared to previous coaching. 12 wins and fewest conference wins ever doesn't build optimism, but hopefully this year is different.

Texas has got to cut down on their turnovers. Not just the guards, but the post players, as well.

And, have improve 3 point shooting (but no new shooters joined the roster). And, have to defend the 3 point line much better.
