Coach Mack Brown to SMU?

It really depends on what he can pull for assistants. June Jones was an offense micromanager who called every single thing, good or bad. Brown kind of just lets the assistants call the shots and make the halftime adjustments.

I'd like to say that if he could get a forward-thinking offensive mastermind to be the OC, they'd be ok, but people regarded Jones as that already, so I don't think it would alter the SMU scheme much. It might make some headroads in recruiting. SMU is virtually talentless across the board on offense this year, except for maybe the two receivers. Their defense actually has some playmakers but they're on the field so much that they end up folding.

With basketball, Larry Brown is very hands-on and their resurgence is directly related to that. If Mack could get out of his comfort zone and actually get some hands-on coaching done for the first time in a while, it might work.

It seems like a very hard place to win consistently and Mack might be setting himself up for failure. I would be surprised to see it happen.

Mack would do fine as he (and Major who would be his OC) would have an even shot to get the second level North Texas recruits which will do fine in the AAC. Also, he would be able to gen-up the big SMU money types and get anything he wants.

Both Mac and Major need something to improve their images (and Major his portfolio) as Strong's dismissals and work ethic reflect bad on Mack and Major indiscretion seems to be working against him.

Mack would be an epic fail.

The man underachieved at the richest school in Texas for the past four years, what do you think's going to happen when you give him less talent?

Mack is a good politician. That's about it, and that one quality went to shambles his last years at UT with his laziness and loss of control. It destroyed his legacy, and I doubt he's got what it takes to redeem himself at this stage of his life. Watching him on the pre-game and halftime shows, he just looks sad. He's checked out.

He's a dud when it comes to X's and O's and recognizing talent and developing most of the players he has, unless he's recruited ungodly players out of high school. Even then it's an uncertainty whether his teams can win conference titles, at a minimum. He's not going to compile that talent at SMU. It's debatable whether he could convince a bunch of smart, talented coaches to join his staff. He'd be on his own, left to his own devices at SMU. The outcome would not be pretty, and I'd understand if his fans don't want to see him return to coaching to tarnish his image even further.

I am glad Mack is gone, but I truly appreciate all that he did for Texas. He simply stayed too long when he should have bowed out. Maybe that was Dodds fault.

However, he would do very well at SMU. He knows the state and how to recruit it. He would not win the National Championship, but he would make them respectable in football wins again. Just my opinion.

Wow. Y'all are sure brutal on a man that brought Texas back to the national stage. I hate to think what y'all would've wrote about DKR right before he retired if there was a way to do it back then. After all, he was 5-5-1 his last season.

We have very selective memories. Between the bowl games and OU games of 1971-76. when DKR decided to step down, I don't think anyone threw themselves in front of the door and said "Oh Coach! Please don't go!". The roaring throng of 39,000 in attendance for his and Broyles last game (50% capacity) speaks volumes. Time heals all wounds. In 16 years look back and compare it to Mack's 16 years.
