Coach G

Put this in a different thread but you would have to read a lot of my rambling to get to it.....AAS reporting that Coach G will resign...

Gail Goestenkors said today she is resigning because she's "tired," adding that her work with USA Basketball the past 10 years didn't allow her time off during the summers and "took its toll."

She said Texas AD Chris Plonsky tried to talk her out of her decision, but Goestenkors said she is "following her heart" on this move.

"Right now, I know I need a break from basketball," she said. "But I also have 100 percent belief in God and his plan for me. At this moment, I don't see myself coaching basketball, but if that's what God wants me to do, by God, that's what I'll do.

"I won't be employed by the university, but I will live in Austin. I'll be around as a fan. It meant the world to me that Jody Conradt wanted me to succeed her. I felt like I was a caretaker of this program. And I want it to be successful. So anything I can do to help the program, I'll do it."

Goestenkors said she told her staff after last season that if UT didn't have success this season, "No one will have to fire me, I'll fire myself. It was this year it just all seemed to hit me.

"The injuries and some of the unique things we had to deal with just really hit me. This program needs someone with high energy. I haven't turned off my phone in 27 years. You are always on high alert, and sometimes it's exhausting.

"I wouldn't change a thing, but I know I need a change."

Goestenkors said injuries played a role in her not achieving the success she had at Duke (where she went to four Final Fours and two NCAA title games).
And she said "we missed on some players in recruiting, and that's on me."

"Even though there's unfinished business, someone else needs to finish it because I'm tired. I'm at peace with the decision."

Texas women's AD Chris Plonsky said, "We all know Gail came here with a boatload of energy. And when she told me she didn't have the step-forwardness she needed for our players, I could tell she was serious.

"I wanted her to stay, tried to re-recruit her. I wasn't as successful this time around. Maybe that means I'm getting older. But it came down to it being about our players and this team, and I will gladly go find someone to take over.

"The only thing we regret is the results weren't better. Other than that, we'd do everything the same."

"Other than that, we'd do everything the same."

This is a pretty self-serving remark by Plonsky. In other words, "DON'T BLAME IT ON ME. I'M STILL A GREAT AD."

I was also thinking Plonsky was being self serving and kind of passing the buck in her interview. But again, that is nothing new fr her.

The real question ow is who do we go and get?

I am really sorry to see her resign. I think that the team is on the verge of getting to the point where they will be consistently vying for the Big 12 title.

At any rate, you have to respect someone willing to step back and look at themselves,at whether they are doing all they can do, if someone else can do a better job, and what's best for the players.

Glad she's staying around and hope to see her at the games whenever she decides the time is right to start going.

Ummm umm umm. WOW! Good for Coach G. I sure was hoping next season things turned around for the team. I still believe she's an excellent coach. So now I'm wondering is she headed to TN. It seemed like we were always one or two injuries away from turning the corner. Best wishes COACH!

I've been silent for a while because my feelings on GG have been so negative that I've found it hard to have any excitement about what she has been doing.

Would love to see Jeff Walz take over the program. He is young and energetic and seems to be a great defensive coach. And he seems to be very likeable. Sorry to say it but GG was just not very likeable.

You realize by comparison and rankings that Texas is a top 10 women's athletic program as a whole? So sometimes you shouldn't let your personal feelings make you sound like an idiot! In the last 8 years she's turned down two athletic director positions at Maryland and Nc state to run both the men's and womens side. Don't just focus on wbb, look at every sport collectively

It was the right hire at the time. Painful as it was, UT showed its class by giving her as long as it did. She is richer for it. Lets all just move along. It only gets better.

Some of you out there lead seriously sad lives. I am ashamed you are part of the UT fan base. What an extremely professional exit by one of the game's elite coaches. I for one wish her the very best and COMPLETELY understand what CP meant by that remark. You have to be pretty pathetic to read something negative into it.

Wishing you peace and joy always Coach G.

Too bad it didn't work out for GG. When hired, she appeared to have what it would take to get the WBB back to a great level, but it didn't happen. Good luck to her.
