It’s the University of Texas.
It’s volleyball.
The Sara Hattis sweepstakes are over, as Cleveland High School’s 6-foot-4 double-sport standout has not only picked her college, but her sport.
The much ballyhooed recruiting process that lasted longer than even Hattis would have preferred.
“I had a passion for both (sports),” Hattis said Sunday afternoon. “But I think I’ll be happy with my decision.”
Hattis last week said she was down to two schools: Purdue for basketball, or Texas for volleyball.
“I took the visits, but I felt real comfortable about Texas,” said Hattis, who turns 18 on Christmas Day. “I like the coaches and players, and just the feeling of that University of Texas atmosphere, the spirit when I went to visit. It just kind of fit for me.”
Hattis will sign her national letter of intent at Cleveland on Tuesday morning, she said.
Hers is one of the more compelling cases in the state’s history. Rarely has a New Mexico female athlete been this coveted nationally, and in two sports.
“There’s really where I was torn in my last couple of days. I was really trying to figure out which sport I wanted to play for the next four years, and even after college,” Hattis said.
She said she also visited Florida and Louisville for volleyball, and Vanderbilt, DePaul and Arizona State for basketball.
“I really didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping it would be easier (to decide) as it came down to the last couple of visits. Even during the summer, I was like, ‘OK, I’ll decide on a sport by the end of the summer.’ ”
Hattis laughed.
“That,” she said, “didn’t happen.”
But she’s content now. And she’ll be fairly close to home.
“I’m real big on my family,” she said. “I’m around them a lot. That’s another thing that drew me. In the end, I made the right decision.”
Hattis’ storm lost the Class 5A state volleyball final in five sets to Gadsden on Saturday night.
