Coach Bible was hired in 1937 to help return UT to glory years after suffering some bad seasons. He did just that. He was hired at what was then one of the top head coaching salaries at $15,000 which of course turned out to be a good investment.
Before he accepted the job he told UT that he wanted enough money to hire the top high school and junior college football coaches in Texas. He knew the value of good assistant coaches and this has helped us in we have not only had great head coaches since then but great assistant coaches.
He hired H.C. B"Bully" Gilstrap who was a great athelete for Ut in the 20s. He was the head football coach at Schreiner Junior College in Kerrville, Texas and had good teams winning the state junior college football championship in 1935. He coached as an assistance coach at UT in football until 1956 and then became a physical-training instructure till the 70s when he retired. He passed away in 1980.
Coach Bible also hired the top high school football coach at Amarillo High School in 1937. It was Coach Blaire Cherry. He was hired by Amarillo in 1930 and had a fantastic record there and won three straight state football championships in 1934, 1935 and 1936. He was a great assistant at UT and whne Coach Bible retired in 1935 he was the head coach at UT from 1947 to 1950 and had a fantastic record. After 1950 he retired from coaching and went into the oil business. He passed away in 1966.
