Here's something to talk about until next Monday's tournament selection news......
With all the bashing we've been doing of Mulkey (of all the coaches we've faced in the past, shes the one I've disliked the most), I was thinking of how Aston did two "tours" at Baylor under Mulkey: 94-96 and 06-07.
Now, let me be the first to say that when I was watching the women during Jody's reign, I barely knew who the staff were. Always next to Jody were the "tall and grim one" (Kathy Harston) and the "short and angry one" (Karen Aston). I didn't put too much effort into figuring out who was who, to be honest.
Back to my point. With all the negativity we have about Mulkey's behavior, I wonder if any traits rubbed off on Karen during the 3 years Karen worked for her. It's weird but understandable how they barely shake hands after a game, yet Karen was sitting next to her for those years. And, she was willing to go back a second time!
I don't think I've ever detected the pettiness or nasty behavior towards opposing players that Mulkey seems to do in Karen.
Also, I was a bit surprised when she suddenly jumped from Texas to Baylor near the end of Jody's time. It was almost like Jody told them she was leaving in the near future? Nah, then she would have stuck around to be a potential candidate?
I'm glad Karen was hired. I admit that I was really hoping to get Goestenkors, but thinking she would never leave Duke. And then when Gail quit, I was thinking, "Okay, let's not go for the $1M coach, let's get someone who can recruit and get them to play nasty defense." And Coach Karen was totally out of my thinking when it was suddenly announced we were interviewing her. We lucked out. I'm a big fan of how she's been rebuilding the program.
But again, Mulkey student? Or the best, nicest version of Mulkey?
Oh another curveball to throw to you...in a parallel world if Mulkey were just as much of an *** but was OUR coach, would we be embarrassed, proud, or making excuses for her?
