Club Soccer Question

I'm trying to understand what's going on right now in Europe. I understand there are many different leagues in the various countries (EPL, La Liga, Serie A, etc.) and I think they each have championships the teams are trying to win. In addition, if they do well enough in the league, they can get into the UEFA Champions League, which seems more like a tournament than a league. If they don't get into the UEFA Champions League, some teams go to the UEFA Cup.

Ok, I'm thinking about all this as an analogy to college basketball. The teams are trying to win their conference championship and depending on how well they do there, they can play in the NCAA or the NIT. Is that a valid analogy?

I think the thing that's screwing me up is that the leagues and tournaments seem to be overlapping. How can you qualify for a tournament midway through the league season? Do the schedules actually overlap or am I confusing things?

Another question. How do you guys keep track of the games with the different schedules? Yahoo! Sports has a nice set of calendars you can subscribe to with your calendar app (NCAAF, NCAABB, NFL, MLB, etc.), but they don't have anything for soccer. Are there any good central locations to find games? Also WC qualifying, US MNT/WNT schedules?

Yes, the Champions League is played while the regular league is going on. (Which is why they play on Tue/Wed instead of weekends.) The NCAA/NIT analogy is about right. It kind of works like you play in the tournament one year based on how you did the year before in your league. There tend to be lots of different competitions going on at once in soccer.

I use Soccernet and it works well for me. Also, Fox has a soccer site that helps keep track of US players.

I have an application on my phone that tracks teams I like around the world and has all the stats and info. Also it tracks the UEFA and other non club events or league events.

You get a hang of what is going on at what time, what is coming down the pipeline and when they are played. So you know when to check into things and what channels they come on to set a DVR or watch live. It just happens.

Reading headlines and tracking main pages of the bigger sites does a mind good as well. Then there are team specific blogs and soccer focused sites that some can share. There is no shortage of info as it is way bigger on the planet than anything we have in the states.

Who do you root for in the various leagues? Enjoy your not so off of an off season!

These impressions are based on watching a couple of UEFA EFC games. Hopefully, watching more will get me up to speed on who the pansies are.

I wouldnt pick a team based on the players that you like. The players change way to often. Just pick a group of fans that you would enjoy. I am Newcastle.

Bufon is the only Italian player that is worth respect and support. The rest don't deserve to breath oxygen. They are cheating scumbag diving dirty playing douchebags. They do steroids and um, yeah, they suck. It is the most corrupt league riddled with cheating and shenanigans. It is hardly worth watching. It is a fraud of a league.

This is a shame when it comes to their national team. They don't need to rely on the dirty ******** they do to prolific levels. They are very talented and skilled yet they resort to this ******** time and time and time again.

Admire Bufon but don't let yourself fall prey to the antics of men who bastardize the beautiful game and molest it as a routine.

This is dedicated to those expecting my anti-Italian rant. I know it has been some time and it was overdue. Did I leave something out about them? It;s been awhile. I did add steroids to their list since there is not a current thread about Nadal.

Another beginner question. Is it an issue for the fans that the team uniforms are reminiscent of a race car with all the advertising?
