Read a post on "on the road again" talking about brave combo, which made me think of Joe King Carrasco, looked at a bunch of his pictures and then looked up Club Foot and saw the Wiki entry- I went to a ton of shows before I worked there for about 2 years, I have highlighted the shows I KNOW that I saw- The LinkAmong those playing there during the approximately three years it was open were U2, Willie Nelson, R.E.M., James Brown, B. B. King, Carl Perkins, King Sunny Ade, Stevie Ray Vaughan, X (U.S. band), Burning Spear, Stray Cats, Dr. John, Big Boys, John Lee Hooker, Leon Russell, Ian Hunter, Joe Cocker, Iggy Pop, John Hiatt, Stanley Turrentine, Albert King, Blasters, NRBQ, Richard Hell, Mitch Ryder, John Cale, Delbert McClinton, The Go-Go's, The Romantics, Joe Ely, Echo and the Bunnymen, Sir Douglas Quintet, Sam and Dave, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Billy Idol, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Junior Walker,Joe King Carrasco and the Crowns, Charlie Musselwhite, UK Subs, Anti-Nowhere League, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Big Youth, Rare Earth, the Ventures, The Lift, The Standing Waves, Gun Club, Roky Erickson, Pete Shelley, The Nighthawks, Grace Jones, David Johansen, The Neville Brothers, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Sparks, Maria Muldaur, The Fleshtones, Rank and File, Edgar Winter, Flipper (band), Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Huey Lewis and the News, Savoy Brown, Bow Wow Wow, Plimsouls, Garland Jeffreys, Mighty Diamonds, T-Bone Burnett, and Wendy O. Williams.

plus I can think of Charlie Sexton as a 13 or 14 year old, D-Day and Brave Combo off the top of my head.

I can't even imagine how many Heinekens I drank before my eventual shift to Jack N Coke when all the booze was free as a barback and bartender. I can still remember carrying 5 cases of bud at a time up the back stairs wth my nose holding the top one in place during some of Delbert's shows. As well as playing hours upon hours of "Defender" waiting for the crowds to drift in. I guess I should mention in wiki that it was Brad First who did most if not all the booking during that time frame and "jagmo" Jens was the poster artist for most of the flyers then.

probably nobody will even post on this thread, but the memories though foggy from booze and weed are still somewhat vivid. Joe king jumping into the crowd...

That place was awesome.

I know I saw Bow-Wow-Wow there, plus a few others. I really wanted to give that punk-chick lead singer my candy.

I was there and still have a matchbook.

I remember going there many times for many of those same bands. (I don't ever remember leaving, though.)

"Club Foot - The only bar in America named after a physical affliction." Hell, that wasn't even PC in the early 80's!

We prolly bumped into each other at some point.

Speaking of Joe King, I once saw him walk his guitar into the ladies room at the Continental Club. He was in there for a little while. Never stopped playing.

**** I damn near lived in that place during that timeframe- Took a job there mainly so I didn't have to pay cover, and of course drinking for free was a nice plus too. though probably i suffered some hearing loss related to working the upstairs bar in front of the stage. You mostly just lip read the orders. Brian and Brian two of my bartender buddies used to wear those airport terminal worker earplugs.

Between Club Foot and Steamboat 1854 (next to paradise on 6th) you had the week frigging covered, with Stevie Ray on Wednesdays and Extreme Heat and ladies night on Thursdays. Continental was in a nook on Congress at 5th by the scarbough building. Liberty lunch was the outside venue, saop creek the dive of dives WAY up north on Lamar, and it was important for my soccer team to go to Chuy's after the games, since they sponsored our shirts, to make sure they kept the doors open....

There were a crapload of up and coming bands, some were just plain crappy but had their little followings. I remember when I bought U2's "Boy" album and was pumped they were coming to town. Still have a stub from the second tour at the Austin Oprea House, I think it's something like ticket 1327 or so.

I quit working there about 4 months before the end, so i missed Linda's going away party in the Cooler....

Brad First was damn near single handedly responsible for making Austin a hot vbenue for the up and coming bands of the time. Wonder where he is today?

I wanna say I saw Brad First in the last year or so at a gig, possibly during SXSW. I also wanna say he has some kind of 'thing' going. Feh. Pay no mind.

Emo's ended his tenure. The Club Cairo/Cannibal Club/Jelly Bar could not keep up.

When I took the History of Rock n Roll class we have the final exam there.

Saw Joe King Carrasco and the Romantics at the height of the fame.

Awesom

Summerof79...I don't mean to call you out on anything, but the Continental Club has been at its present location on South Congress since 1957.

Why didn't you bold the UK Subs? They are badass!

I saw the Big Boys there, I think. I forget all the placesI saw them in various States in our great country.

A favorite show of mine was a little later in '86. Red Hot Chili Peppers, T.S.O.L. and Thelonious Monster at the Ritz. There was a quarter pipe set up.

did anyone else go to the Talk Talk/Psychedelic Furs in that airplane hanger looking place summer of '85 when someone threw a bottle at the pfurs guitarist during the first encore and they ran of the stage?

That was my first concert.

OMG I was there...and afterwards went to some chicks house and took the guitarist to the party...wild gig~!...

That airplane hangar place was called The Coliseum...

My dad owned a nightclub and on Thursday it was "College Night"...Joe King Performed and some other guy...looked like Elvis...can't remember his name...oh yeah...his name was Dino Lee...

Anyhow, one night Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn came and started jamming with the band...and another night Charlie Sexton...

Great times!

Re- continesntal -Could have been a different club- only went there once and took a lude so things were fuzzy to say the least. Could they have been remodeling? Remember it was a short term deal. Only recalled it because of sleeping with a particular gal that night. psychedelic Furs - I forgot about them. Really good music sex music as I recall. As was U2's Boy.

Actually surprised there are so many old codgers on here, I thought this one was going to die a quick thread death drifting to the bottom in about a day. One of the most surprising shows was actually Billy Idol, wrote him off as another punk screamer and that dude actually had a voice, Best shows to work were Delbert's as I guess looking back, a slightly older crowd with enough green to fill the tip jars, plus even today he's a good party. Need to see him again some day.

As far as not bolding some of the others I actually think I saw all but about 4 bands off that list, but bolded the ones I was sure about.

Sort of funny thing from the other week was I brought the Stones Zilker Park CD over to a buddies house for his 40th a week ago to show off how my daughters made the cut for the video. Look at the beginning of the Brown Sugar encore for the cutest little girl at the beginning with a great headshot and that's one of mine. But in 1981? I went to Houston and the Dallas to see the Stones because I didn't know how much longer Keith was going to be around, and wanted to see them while they were still "young".

Thought I must admit they ******* cranked at Zilker FAR beyond my expectations. Bringing my kids was one of the best decisions I have made as how often do you get a chance to immortalize your kids on a rolling stones video?

Anyhow stop rambling! Good times back in the day. I only wish X had been on the scene then, oh my lord. Katz's was the only late night place to eat back then. Probably ate about 100 of their Chicken salad platters back then after hours.

Anyhow glad to rekindle a few other memories for the rest of you guys, but no Doubt Club Fott ROCKED!

Another thing - drinking age in Texas was 18 back in 79. Went to 19 in the early 80s and 21 around 86 or so. Was easy to walk 6th Street and catch Stevie Ray and other bands without any ID hassle at all. If your balls had dropped, you could get in.

One other thing that I remember about that time was that we went to upper Barton Creek a LOT and there was nobody there. Of course working at night that meant we were there a lot during weekday afternoons. Getting tan playing in the creek by day and partying while you worked into the wee hours at night.

good times...

I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn OPEN for Delbert McClinton at Club Foot.

I actually played at Club Foot a couple of times in 1983. One time we warmed up a band called the Skunks. They were pretty good. Another time we warmed up a crappy cover band that played frat parties called the Argyles. (Not that we were especially good or talented ourselves, mind you.)

Anyway, one of the cool things about Club Foot was that many of the bands and performers had signed/carved their names on a wall in the dressing room. For example, members of the B-52s and U2 had signed their names. It was pretty cool knowing you were in the same dressing room in which those bands had hung out.

I dated a girl who was an Argyles fanatic, so I saw them quite a lot in 1985-1986. They actually had some originals that didn't suck -- new-wavey guitar pop, a la The Romantics. Lead singer's first name was "Brown", if I'm not mistaken.
