Really? I suppose it depends on what you mean by "good for us". You have taken the position that human overpopulation is bad for the planet. Seems to me less food will ultimately equal less people.

It also seems to me that one of the best ways to increase food supplies in the face of a very small decrease in production is to stop subsidizing corn for ethanol production and put it back in to the food market. But that's probably just crazy talk.

Is this like Obama's "jobs saved" statistic?

If the scientists are correct. It looks like the most reasonable approach would be to shift crop production to those who are less affected and to areas which are now more suited for crop growth. I also wonder what the effect of increased levels of CO2 does to plant growth. Can't hurt right, taking that independently of temperature rise?

The study is definitely interesting. I just have trouble with conclusions that say something like "crops were good but would have been better if not for temperature increase." I know they are looking historical records and it is based on reasonable assumptions. I would just like others to approach the same issue from a little different angle to see if the conclusions are supported.

Farmers have known this for hundreds of years. Some years, the climate is great for production, sometimes not. over farming areas can also be attriubuted to crop decline. warming trends could assist in bringing more crop worthy land in more northern areas.

The study speculates that yields would have increased more for some crops than they actually did had climate change not been in play. Those with keen scientific reason will note that (1) the yields are acknowledged to have increased, (2) the study was retrospective, (3) the effect was not uniform over crop species or continents. If CC is causing 5% decreases in crop yields, that is a very big deal. Very. Analysis of select crop yields against theoretical and counterfactual circumstances in a retrospective study is a far cry from proof, however.

After all these threads some posters still don't know the difference between weather and climate.

i know the difference but the changes in crop production is not due to climate change, the climate in the farm belt areas aroiund the world has not changed. the study is limited, all it is doing to following the change in weather patterns.

So if global warming is making the existing farmlands less productive, wouldn't it also be opening up areas that were previously too cold for production?

Maybe they're just farming the wrong spots. Maybe vast areas of Siberia and Canada are now arable where they used to be permafrost.

Adapt or die.

Wasn't that Darwin/Wallace? Why do you insist on denying evolution?

Luddites!

Churning the CC dataset for a CPD model seems expensive and hardly reliable. This is not Cosmology here where it takes decades and billions with a dash of Numerology to poof up a model. How hard can it be to perform controlled experiments in the lab?
