Cliff Lee officially to Rangers

Thought I would repost now that it is official.

Reported Beavan, Lueke, and Lawson with Smoak. Not too bad if that is the case. Avoided losing Holland, Scheppers, or Perez if true.

Hell yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I'm in the minority on this board, but I'm glad to see Smoak go. If we're going to have a first-baseman who hits around .200, I'd rather him be better with the glove than Smoak.

HELL, YEAH!

We gave up a few good prospects, but nothing I'll lose sleep over. Just hope Beavan doesn't turn into a star with a division rival. That would suck.

Texanne, Davis is a gold-glove calibur 1B, but he has the plate discipline of Rob Deere. This will be his last chance to show staying power, IMO. I hope he does, as I like him a lot.

Smoak will be very good someday but I feared he was going to turn into one of those hitters who could only pull the ball and has to hit against the shift constantly. Hopefully Crash finds the bat sooner than later.

I don't like to see Smoak go because he will be very solid one day, and probably very soon. Love his plate discipline; the average will come up with time.

However, getting Lee is HUGE. Start making your plans to visit Arlington in October.

Is this really official? I thought the deal hasn't been approved by MLB or the bankruptcy court, both of whom have to approve the deal since it adds $1.5M indebtedness to the Rangers.

Nolan says that as long as they are within their Budget then they are okay. Daniels says he expects some phone calls. But, they surely would not have agreed otherwise. But then bizarro may be the order of the day with them.

It is great to get Lee. I did hate to give up Smoak, but to acquire the best pitcher in baseball if only for the rest of the season is an opportunity that doesn't come along very often.

TA, you have your better fielding 1B now. Brought his .180 BA with him.

Sure sounds official today from all the media sources I have heard... Lee addition is GREAT news as the Good Guys are in first place and need to make a serious run the second half of the season.

A .180 BA is not much worse than a .206 BA.

What I like about this trade is that Lee not only is a top-quality pitcher, he eats innings, too -- four CGs in June. And if I were a Rangers starter, I sure as **** would not trust the bullpen right now.

What's more frustrating than watching that meltdown was watching until 1:30 AM after a rain delay and extra innings. I really feel sorry for the fans who stayed to watch that debacle.

Just awful finishes the last 2 games. Plain horrid.

My views on Davis/Smoak boil down to this:

Smoak has the potential to be an above-average fielding 1B and a GREAT hitting 1B.
Davis is a GREAT fielding 1B and has the potential to be an average hitting 1B.

If given the choice, most anyone would choose the former. I simply see less upside with Davis. He's the kind of guy who can murder AAA pitching, but you need an approach that will allow for success at the major league level. Smoak already had that part down, which is more important for long-term success. I hope CD can develop that, but I'm not seeing it.

Potential is just a nice way of saying you ain't done anything yet. At least we know that Davis is great with the leather. Perhaps he can work out his difficulites at the plate, perhaps not. But he'll cost the Rangers fewer games defensively than Smoak.

Uggggh, amazing. This is why they play the games. There is just no way we lose 4 to the Orioles, no way. Please, for the love of baseball, Rangers please win on Sunday before the all-star break so all Ranger fans do not vomit in unison. Angels got spanked tonight so that is something.

As a Rangers fan since Day 1, the only thing I can think of to say after the Orioles' sweep is:

(then again, I think I've had the same feeling each and every year of their existence--yes, even those years when they won the division given the way they played and exited the playoffs each time). Same song, different verse.

Even in Lee's loss it was helpful- the bullpen got some needed rest. I'm still hopeful that Oct is going to be more than just TEXAS-0U.

BTW, if anyone has MLB's extra innings on directv, the moment Balt got the last out Fri nite was the moment Smoak went up for his first AB as a Mariner....The absolute worst AB I've ever seen. 3 pitches, and sat his *** down. He's not a hitter.

So far as Mariner he's 1 for 8 (.125 BA) with 3 strileouts. Yeah, I'm going to miss Smoakey a lot

Good Lord, his All-Star appearance was a microcosm of his season: 6 pitches, 5 strikes, 3 outs. OMG. Can't wait for the 2nd half. Wish he was pitching Thursday.

Hook'em!!!
