The reason the Rangers are in great shape with a young roster, a low payroll and a lot of prospects is because they have been late season sellers. They have enough prospects that they could bite on Lee. Obviously not every prospect becomes a player. But don't make a Mark Texeria deal in reverse. How sick would we be come October if Derek Holland and two other prospects are pitching/playign well for the Mariners and Cliff Lee goes about 5-5 with a 4.5 ERA for us before heading off for Boston, NY or Cali for a salary that would cover about 1/3 of the Rangers 2010 payroll?
I'd much rather get Oswalt, primarily since he is under contract for another year after this one. It would be great if the Rangers could get both (Lee for Holland and Salty?, Oswalt for Davis, Perez and spare?), but it won't happen. The Rangers hands will be tied at least through the 2011 trade deadline due to the bankruptcy, unless they are willing to completely unload their farm system. It is a different leverage dynamic when you are a buyer instead of a seller in the market.
as much as I would want Lee, to only be renting him for 6 months seems too steep of a price. I would pass unless you could get him for Salty, C.Davis and some AA pitcher not named Perez.
We already overpaid (Main) to get Molina and to get the Giants to pay the remainder of his 2010 salary. [Thanks, btw, for hitting into that 6-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs last night, Bengie. I didn't like the deal when we made it. Now, I hate it.]
Let's not compound the problem by giving away another good pitching prospect--in the division, no less--to get a three month rental.
without benefit of hindsight yet, this is our best trade ever...even better than bringing fergie here in 74
i wished smoak well when he was here, it just wasn't happening...some really sorry AB's in late innings when it counted most, his inability to hit breaking balls, his lack of defense, his low assed BA, i'm happy to see him go
only thing that would suck w/b if he connects with a new hitting coach and starts living up to his hype....but that didn't happen here, never would
GREAT trade...not only does this put us in the drivers seat for the west, it makes us dangerous in 5 and 7 game series
