Clear Wireless in Austin

Anybody have experience with their 4G mobile broadband? I'm having trouble coming up with reasons not to go with them. I don't travel out of Austin much, their prices are really good, they offer unlimited plans, and they don't require a contract.

The sales lady at Radio Shack told me that they are sharing their network with Sprint (Clear is using Sprint's towers and Sprint's 4G broadband customers are on Clear's network).

I actually interviewed with them for a sales manager position (didn't get it) and did a fair amount of homework for the handful of interviews I had. The pattern seems to be that when they are new in a market they are great. As they continue to sign subscribers they get too much bandwidth going through their system and the speed really starts to drop off to the point where the service is fairly poor. The question is how long will that be - a month? 6 months? A year? 2 Years? No telling. They say they will expand the network as needed but the pattern in other cities (Seattle is a good example) says they can't or won't keep up.

Sprint is a major investor in Clear (along with Intel, Google and a few others) so Sprint's 4G network is actually Clear's technology. The packages they are offer are really good in my opinion as long as the network can keep up. It's a really neat technology and I hope it works out well for them and you if you decide to go with them.

my good friend worked there for a month and then got fired. the fact that they hired him makes them a bit suspicious to me, but then they did get rid of him rather quickly which i guess redeems them.

As far as "using Sprint's towers" goes, in my experience having worked for both Sprint & AT&T, a lot of co's utilize the same towers & not all tower locations are owned by a wireless carrier.

Instead, these 'other towers' are owned by a co. that either owns or leases the land, then installs a tower & requires the wireless carrier to maintain their own equipment on it. That's why you will sometimes see a tower with a large cluster of cell pieces in different rows.

I have been considering Clear, but hesitant to leave Suddenlink because run my business from home, and three phone lines. Uptime is crucial, and there just doesn't seem to be a lot of reviews from people in my neck of the woods (Leander/CP.) The above link gives me even more reasons not to make the switch...

I signed up with them 2 months ago and haven't had problems. The speed is much faster at my mom's house in Round Rock than it is at my home downtown but still adequate for my needs.

I work from home a lot and VPN stays connected for days.

I didn't sign a contract but purchased the equipment so I'm month to month.

I hope they expand coverage so it will work while on Lake Travis. Right now I have to fall back to AT&T 3G which is s-l-o-w and not usable for remote desktop viewing.
