Cleaning up Credit History

Is there a good company that will help you clean up your credit history, and help raise your credit score? I know there are companies everywhere, but most try to take advantage of the consumer.

What is the best way to approach cleaning up my credit report?

Do it yourself. If you've been denied credit recently, order a report from the three bureaus for free. If not, then pay for it, but get them. See what is on there and dispute. "Not mine" or "It was paid" is all you'll have to do (some allow you to dispute over the phone, but most will require in writing). Wait. The creditor has thirty days to verify. If the do verify, dispute again. And again. And again. A time consuming process, but one well worth it.

you can also buy a packet at Office Depot for like $20 that has all the forms preprinted to dispute and also gives advice.
