He's throwing strikes, putting the ball in play, and relying on his defense.
Strikeouts are overrated. I agree with Crash Davis -- ground balls are more democratic. I don't care if my pitcher doesn't strike anyone out as long as he gets out of each inning unscathed.
on the postgame show CJ said he was at the ballpark till 1am watching game tape of cliff lee & what he did to get the angels out....he said the focus was on throwing strikes and concentrating on changing location on different pitches-- moving the ball around the strike zone
not sure if he was honest, or just paying homage to a cy young winning teammate...if he was being honest then the trade was worth more than just lee's arm....cj said that was the first time he didn't walk anyone in a start in his memory, at any level of ball
Yeah, the no walks was huge. And I agree -- trading for Cliff Lee will affect the won/loss column even when he's not pitching. Everyone on the staff can benefit from watching him.
Texanne, there is a lot to like right now with our Rangers. Clutch hitting, terrific defense, and lockdown pitching. Here's hoping the Good Guys can win tonight behind Feldman, then complete a sweep on Sunday.
hard to imagine CJ with zero walks, but I saw it (dvr late last night) with my own 4 eyes. Unreal. It's not just him learing from CLee either; all the camera shots of Big Game next to him in dugout and they're talking pitching. It makes my baseball pants go wild with all the good stuff going on.
Going to the game tonight (actually my first this year) - hope Feldman sees the error of his ways and cranks it up tonight.
I am sooooooo jealous! Be sure you get there early enough to see Tom Grieve's induction to the club's Hall of Honor.
I never thought much of Tom's prowess on the field, and he left a lot to be desired as a GM, but he's been a good color man, and his dedication and devotion to the ballclub is unmistakable. I am happy for him.
Me too. Should be a really nice ceremony. They're bound to show old films of him playing for the Senators and the early Ranger days which will be very cool. I've got 2 extra tickets if you and Mr. TA want to hustle down to Arlington. Otherwise if you know someone locally that needs two good tickets.
CJ is looking good and getting it done despite some of my negative comments about him in the distant past. These are good times right now Zealots - savor them. H69 you are going to a historical game.... I remember watching Grieve as a player in '73-75 or '76. It will be a fun night and one I hope you help get the W for your fellow Zealots.
Santana pitched great tonight. We had little chance of hitting him. I had hoped he would only make 7, but he went 8 strong innings. The good nws was that that he went against our #5. We should be able to come back and take tomorrow's game for a 3 of 4 series.
P.S. : THe Grieve ceremony was good, though it had no videos and some of the speeches were a tad long.
A couple of weeks ago we were hearing the Rangers don't have an Ace in the rotation. Now we have Lee going past eight innings three games in row, Wilson blowing them away the next day and Hunter is now 7-0, with a chance to make it 8 -0 today.
