Chuy's

How could I have lived in Ausitn almost four years and not known Chuy's made their own corn tortillas? I had only been to Chuy's once and wasn't impressed so I hadn't been back until this past weekend. I had the Deluxe chicken enchilades and lots of corn tortillas and they were damn good. The rice and beans were just OK but I was really impressed with the quality of the enchiladas. Can't wait to go back.

I've always liked Chuy's and I don't get the hate. I think it's one of those places that hipsters like to trash because of its popularity. I've never been that big a fan of their hot sauce, but their fajitas have always been solid and they have this flat blue corn tortilla chicken enchilada dish (forgot what they call it, maybe the "Santa Fe"? edit: it's the Chuy's Special) that's pretty decent. Not to mention the Hatch Chile Fest stuff.

Is there better Mexican food in town? Yeah, maybe, but so what? You can say that about any restaurant - I mean, why go to Dirty's when you can go to Casino El Camino? And why go to Casino when you can go to Chris Madrid's? It's not always just about the food. Chuys is fun, locally owned, has some history and Austin funkiness, and most of the menu is decent. What's not to like?

not sure it's so much hate as it is they just have really bad food

I like a lot of their food, but their salsa tastes like Campbell's Cream of Tomato soup...no kick at all.

i never had any gripes about the place until i got cheese enchiladas that tasted like they had bbq sauce on them

Not exactly sure what your point is, but I'll put Chuy's food up against the crap I had at Las Manitas any day of the week. Maybe you feel differently, that's fine. But personally, I find it a bit hypocritical that many of the same people who trash Chuy's are the most strident defenders of Las Manitas. To me, they both personify the Keep Austin Wierd attitude, the only difference being that one is expontentially more successful than the other. Why is it that as soon as something no longer struggles financially, it becomes a badge of honor in certain circles to trash it?

I'm perfectly capable of separating the food from the causes. I'm sure Chuy's also supports things I wouldn't personally agree with. I just found so little redeeming qualities in the Las Manitas migas I had that I cannot understand how it's managed to stay in business this long. But, to each his own.

I havent been to the one in Austin lately but the last two times I've been to the one here in SA its sucked ***...and it had been good before

I can tolerate Chuy's soupy red salsa. It's not hot enough, but I like the cilantro flavor (and I usually don't like cilantro all that much). Their chunky red salsa (which amounts to pico de gallo) isn't very good.

Cheese enchiladas with meat sauce? I would never, EVER order that. When I order cheese enchiladas, I'm going chipotle or rojas or even a nice verdes sauce. Meat sauce? Blech.

Their rice isn't bad, it's forgettable. Their beans are closer to bad.

Chuy's is completely, 100% edible. It is far from bad. All my opinion, of course.

Count me in the likes-it category. Their pico/chunky salsa is my favorite in the city, and the jalapeno ranch is god's gift to toppings. I'm a fan of their chicken dishes, and nachos.

BTW - I agree 100% on the enchiladas comments. Don't get enchiladas at Chuys. That's ok, the rest of the food is still better-than-good, and as I mentioned, I love that pico stuff.

I have a non food bone to pick with Chuy's. I will only eat there if friends insist on it for this reason: They misspell Elvis's name in their restaurants. They make up this atmosphere with some tribute bust of Elvis and then mispell his name under the thing. Pisses me off as an Elvis fan, and pisses me off on principle! Spell the name right! I bring this up with the host(ess) EVERY time I walk in the place. Even complained to the manager at the one on 183 N. and still.... nothing. Pisses me off. In fact I'm getting more and more pissed sitting here thinking about it.

They Include his middle name which is properly spelled A-R-O-N Aron..... they spell it Aaron. It is an odd spelling, but is a family name. I don't know if it is related to the middle name of his twin brother (Jesse Garon) who died at birth. I do know that his mother had his birth certificate redone twice in order to be sure that it was spelled properly. Interestingly enough his name is misspelled on his tombstone. One of the 'facts' that conspiracy theorists point to his being 'alive.' It does upset me that Chuy's doesn't spell it correctly.

Has no one had the steak burrito with boom-boom sauce? I will agree that most of the other stuff is average but also the jalapeno ranch is greatness.

I'll have the #4 with a cheese enchilada and a chicken relleno and deluxe tomatillo sauce on top of everything. I really like the fact that they coat the bottom of the plate with extra cheese as well.
