Christie endorses Trump

Just watched the video from Ft worth. Christie says he is going to finish out as Governor and go into the private sector.

Christie's a pragmatist. At some point, you kind of have to either throw in with the guy you know is a scumbag but is probably going to win, and have a shot at some political payback, or you stand your ground and support a guy who is unlikely to win anyway.

I have to admit, I never thought it would go this far. I wholly underestimated the conservative right's absolute determination to do anything not to lose an election this time around, coupled with the desire to stick it to the "establishment" - even if it means voting for a guy who you know can't stand you and is lying to you through his teeth about his conservative values just to get your votes.

Christie always seemed smart, politically attuned and courageous to me. To my southern sensibilities he's seemed brash and needlessly abrasive ... then again I've never walked the streets of Newark.

To get elected governor of New Jersey, he has to be more of a centrist than the Texas Republican party will tolerate.

Very honestly this endorsement surprises me in a way that causes me to reexamine my values and the Trump candidacy. Maybe Trump is not as dumb as he's acting, which I pray is the case for the other candidates in the race as well.

Trump is against illegal immigration, global warming tomfoolery, obamacare, and common core. What more do you want?

By the way I'm voting for Rubio or Kasich.

Trump said that he wants to nominate a politician to be his VP. Trump/Christie ticket?

This makes me question my "Trump is a Hillary plant" belief. And the Christie on the ticket possibility disturbs me. Can't definitively say why but I guess it is because they appear, in my assessment, to be of too similar character. This campaign just gets crazier and scarier every day.

Unlike Nashorn, I see Christie on the ticket with Trump (or Cruz or Rubio for that matter) a reassuring link to someone who can reach across party lines and get something done and pick and win the right battles when principles of good government are at stake.

(I honestly can't imagine what would be less relevant than a Cruz VP.)

why have the northeast connection although trying for the wisconsin vote was a fiasco.

This tells me a few things.

First, Christie knows his career in New Jersey politics is over after his presidential bid.

Second, Christie believes Trump is a slam dunk to win the nomination.

Third, Christie believes Trump has a task chance to win the election.

Fourth, Christie wants to be Attorney General.

I don't think he'll be on the ticket. I think Trump knows that having someone who talks tough on the VP end doesn't balance the ticket and could distract from him. I think Trump is going to look for a more mainstream Republican (in ideology and in tone) to try to unify the Party behind him. His VP will be more conservative than Christie but softer spoken.

Christie's fundraising chair, H-P executive Meg Whitman, issued a statement slamming Christie for endorsing Trump:

Chris Christie's endorsement of Donald Trump is an astonishing display of political opportunism. Donald Trump is unfit to be President. He is a dishonest demagogue who plays to our worst fears. Trump would take America on a dangerous journey. Christie knows all that and indicated as much many times publicly. The Governor is mistaken if he believes he can now count on my support, and I call on Christie's donors and supporters to reject the Governor and Donald Trump outright. I believe they will. For some of us, principle and country still matter.
I could not have said it better.

You know, I'm not sure about this. It depends on how much of Trump's persona is an act. The Trump that I'm watching campaign wouldn't want Christie on the ticket because Christie's liable to say something interesting that will take attention away from Trump. I just don't see Trump picking anyone for his ticket that would even remotely draw any attention away from him. That means no Ted Cruz, probably no Marco Rubio, and definitely no Christie. I expect him to pick a yes-man or yes-woman for the role.

I could be wrong. Clearly the smart thing to do is to pluck a Kasich or Rubio to try and convince people that he's really not this crazy angry lunatic.

Christie was painfully awful on ABC's "This Week" trying to express his support for Trump. Stephanopoulos kept showing Christie clips from his own stump speeches attacking Trump, and Christie had no response. Often times, he would tell George "well, Donald will have to answer that question. It's still early." Still early? Super Tuesday is tomorrow! WTF? The Trump campaign would be wise to keep Christie from doing anymore interviews.

This makes me wonder what such a yes-man/woman would be like. It would have to be someone who basically agrees with Trump but is soft spoken enough not to say anything that would take the attention off of Trump. Jeff Sessions (who just endorsed him) may be an option.

Stephanopoulos clearly showed that Christie backed Trump merely out of political opportunism. Over and over again Christie couldn't elaborate on any issue that he actually agreed with Trump on.
