'Christian' folk and appearances

So my travels took me to Cal State University at Los Angeles this past weekend. Girlfriend's kid was in a tae kwan doe (sp?) tournament being held there.

On a side note, these MF's kick the living **** out of each other.

Anyhoo, in my boredom, I picked up a student newspaper off the rack and flipped thru it.

The cover story was about a member of their track team with olympic dreams.

In his photo (nice enough looking kid) he's wearing a t-shirt that reads "Strippers Love My Pole".

The articles references his "strong religious faith in God".The Link

I'm interested in what you folks think of this. Is it possible that this presumably fine young man indeed has a "strong religious faith in God" based on his wardrobe?

If that is the case and he does have a stong faith in God, then he made a very poor choice with his shirt. The Bible does talk about our witness in our behavior and actions so, yeah, not a good choice.

Potentially he's advertising big junk, and that is definitely something that he should be thanking God for on a pretty consistent basis.

I agree with TXHookem.

Plus, we need to get the idea that Christians are perfect out of our heads. It is the fact that we recognize our imperfections that allows God to work in our lives. Obviously, that is not a shirt worn by the majority of Christians.

Actually, Ryan, Xians don't believe any person deserves to go to heaven.

As a past pole vaulter, I can see where I would think the shirt was funny in reference to pole vaulting.

I do agree it is a poor choice of a shirt, for a Xian however.

Also, I have to retell this story that I love. In England a major newspaper published a story entitled, "What is wrong with the world?" G K Chesterton wrote the editer, "Dear Sir, with regards to your article, "What is wrong with the world?" I AM. Faithfully yours, G K Chesterton. Sums up the Xian theology on humanity as succinctly as possible.

does it even say he's a christian or is everyone here just assuming?

Is this kinda like Gangbangers from LA wearing crosses around there necks.
All the while killing people and selling drugs?

I think that he's a Christian because his Cross bling is clearly visible, right over the stripper silhouette's nasty bits.

There's no possible way I can know if he's being hypocritical or not since I've neither met him nor read/heard anything he's said on the subject of off-color jokes on t-shirts. There's no necessary correlation between believing in God and believing one shouldn't make a shlong joke in public.

Ryan your post is juvenile and assine and totally mistaken, other's have correctly explained why what you've said bears no relation to what Christianity is all about so I won't get into that.

If you are truly sincere in your goal to spread atheism to the masses (an anti religous zealot as it were) perhaps you should learn a bit about the faith you mock and attack it on thoughtful instead of juvenile terms. It would make for a more compelling arugment and you would have a greater chance of winning undecided's over to your viewpoint.

Just a thought. Most on here like intelligent give and take and I bet some are persuaded by it. You should, if you want to represent the anti fatih viewpoint, move beyond mocking flying spaghetti monsters or comparing God to Willy Wonka.

Step your game up my man, and stap it on.

As to the OP, I don't think a chirstian should wear that shirt, at least not when they are talking about their faith in God. There might not be anything wrong perse with any action in and of itself, but if it steps on or discredits your witness you probably shouldn't do it. It obviously discredit's his witness in your eyes as you pose the question, so he probably messed up. Not going to say that makes him an insincere christian, just a thoughtless one at this point in time.

I would think by virtue of the fact that he's in Cali he's more or less likely to be sincere, since that doesn't seem to be the expected/in/norm there the way it is in the Bible belt. If you are going to claim christianity in Cali it's probably b/c you believe it, while I'm convinced many in the south claim it simply out of expediency b/c it is the societal norm.

i had sex earlier this evening... on my way home i was listening to the River. (christian station) maybe i like the message or maybe i like the sound of the music.

"Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu"

just about everything can be interwined with a sexual reference or drug reference... everything can be used as slang these days. big dill (pun intended)

doesn't make you less Christian (or xian, to some idiots)

To be a Christian, then he should be setting an example to others of what it is like to be one. Wearing a shirt like this is something that does not separate him from Non-Christians.
Faith by actions, not words.
