Christian Bale is my hero

What an idiot...he's the freaking amateur.

I've been in the military and Wall Street. The stakes, your colleagues lives and billions of dollars of money, are higher than anything out of Hollywood. Regardless of your opinions on current events, the rank and file folks who I worked with were the most intelligent and professional anywhere. Never, and I mean never, would this tirade be tolerated. Bale would get his *** escorted off the property.

The associate director, Bruce, is pathetic...can't even stand-up for his troops. What he should have done is close down the scene, tell the whole crew to come back tomorrow. Chew Shane's (the director of photography) *** out in private, which as a professional, he deserves. And tell Bale to freaking cool it, deal with it, fine his ***, and move on. If he doesn't, oh well...you got insurance. You gotta take care of your people.

The producer is the most important person on the set, they're the ones with the money, they're the ones cutting Bale's check.

Bale, no doubt is very valuable and may or not be be the go or no go on a very expensive movie. But Bale has no work if studios blacklist him. Any other industry, that's what happens if you're abusive to colleagues. You'll never again work in that industry. He's under contract from Time Warner, a public corporation. How much backlash from labor rights groups would that studio and company take if this continues to happen?

Hell, what if the DP told his cameraman and grips (his crew and people he hired who are loyal to him) to leave the set? No movie. If anyone in Hollywood had any convictions, that movie would be blacklisted by any DP's, cameramen, grips that McG (the director) would try to bring in as replacements.

Everyone answers to someone else, even hot shot movie stars.

Yeah, you know why they didn't have the spine...cause it's freaking Christian Bale. Having him on a movie right now is worth $$$ to these producers...they'll let him go on his tirade as probably most A list actors are prone to do and grin and bear it. Doesn't change the fact that Bale was a total douche in this, but if you think he's gonna be blacklisted because of this...well perhaps a cursory glance of an Entertainment Weekly or similar rag while waiting in line at the checkout is needed.

Days of the hollywood blacklist went away some time ago. And in the normal corporate world it's hard to have a reputation since it is very limiting what you can tell someone that calls to verify employment.

Short of killing someone, I doubt Christian Bale would ever be blacklisted by the studios. Having him in a film virtually assures its' financial success. On second thought, he could probably shoot the director AND the producer and still not be blacklisted.

While it is not going to happen to Bale, didn't Mickey Rourke burn enough bridges with producers and directors that he became persona non grata in the late 1980s (or was because he kept turning down great roles; or both)?

I buy el guapo's link. A production is hugely expensive where you're lucky to get 8 minutes of usable film in a day. Every effort is focused on creating those few moments when the actors occupy the set with the director and dp.

On the tape of Bale, it sounds like this moment has been interrupted many times during the course of the shoot.. There's a reason the assistant director demands "quiet on the set!" the moment before shooting begins. All the activity and bustle must stop so the actors can get their part done.

Another thing about the tape is that we can't see what the object of Bale's rage is doing. He seems to be blowing Bale off. On the issue, Bale is dead right about it being unprofessional to distract actors in a scene. Bales is accurate in saying it is the equivalent of him adjusting lights already set by the dp.

Bale is over the top, but movie-making is an emotional experience. There is a lot at stake. My guess is that many people in the industry are wondering as much about that dp as they are about Bale.

And, as to the general point about this not happening in other professions: absurd. Anywhere there are tens of millions of dollars at stake with the responsibility falling on the shoulders of a few, you find this kind of behavior. This isn't the trenches of a regional office, this is the spotlight and pressure of the executive floor at the main office.

There are plenty of lost tempers in every field. It's tolerated based on bottom line results otherwise known as money. Period.

Get results and don't kill anybody, and all the rest is tolerated. Not all successful executives rage, but they probably could.

So verbally abusing and physically threatening a colleague (the director of photography no less) is okay because it was a very intense scene?

Why couldn't Bale just get the DP fired?

Again, there is no situation, no matter how intense in any field, where threatening physical assault
on a colleague is acceptable. People lose their cool all the time, people may yell in the heat of the moment, but verbally abusing someone for 4 minutes and threatening physical assault gets you fired. What workplace is that not the rule? Simply the liability from a lawsuit is enough motivation to get that person out of there.

I don't think anyone is saying Bale is a model for proper behavior.

You also seem to be reaching conclusions about Bale's motives without much of a context beyond the diatribe on tape. You can't see what the other person is doing.

Dang, the Navy must have changed considerably. I can't imagine a former Navy officer not having seen this sort of thing happen on a regular basis from Admirals on down to the lowest ratings.

What happened to men? Getting your *** chewed and dealing with it is part of being a grown man. If you can't deal with someone yelling at you and being angry then you have issues.

I agree with Roma. When there are millions of dollars or lives on the line, tempers and emotions will run high. This is part of being human. For all we know they might have been trying to get this shot for hours and everything was falling into place and the DP was doing something to **** it up. If you screw with a man's lively hood, don't be surprised if he goes off on you.

Now if he'd punched him it would be different, but a little yelling and blowing off steam? Come on.
