Chris Warren’s coin flip

Charlie Strong gave him this to use for the crucial decision. Charlie just wants to help these guys be successful.

The coin flip was probably a stunt by Warren, but it turns out that he was ready to go to Washington, had Soso announced for us. So, it was a pretty close thing.

His mom just would not let him come to UT if Soso was coming here. Apparently Jason Higdon said this. He said the delay by 45 minutes before Warren announced (instead of the 8 am that was initially scheduled) was not without reason. Not sure if it was the RB depth chart or something else that Warren's mom had an issue with. Warren had clearly said earlier that he would welcome Brossette joining at RB, because it would help take some load off, and preserve his own longevity for later. And that thinking is not so rare among every down RB prospects. So, this Soso thing surprised me.

If we were about to lose Warren, I have to say that we kinda dodged a bullet when Soso didn't pick us! I think that highly of Warren as a pure punishing RB.

In the Soso/Warren sweepstakes, I have a feeling that we got the guy we wanted. Both may prosper and, frankly, that would be great. But I love this guy's size, power and speed. Probably as much as MJ and Heard, I can't wait to see Warren on the field in September.

Quick summary, imho, of Chris Warren.

He runs, catches, blocks, breaks tackles, makes tackles, VERY WELL.

I absolutely agree when watching the two objectively on tape. Warren's punishing style of running and balance with power when breaking tackles is something I feel we are sorely missing. It's the aspect I hated to lose when Bergeron was booted.

After watching the two closely, I had a big smile on my face. We got the back more suited to filling the punishing, relentless running style we are missing. My first impression of Soso...damn that line is very good and half the yards he's getting are ripe for the taking. much of the rest was separating from guys with distance to close or already closing in bad angles.

Warren was earning the hell out of his yards with much more contested runs. Soso = solid moves and speed, which we have in Gray for the most part. With a struggling OL, Soso would have many of the same problems Gray has making extra yards. Warren = balance and tackle-breaking power, which we need. This guy will find extra yards when they aren't there. We need a powerful back now who will help squeeze out the toughest yards and move the chains for our younger QB's. Put the offense in manageable down and distance, and keep the defense off the field. Warren is the guy, we got the best choice of the three for our needs.

Brad, I just did the same thing and agree with you 100%. I think both backs are really good but for the life of me I can't understand looking at both backs that they place 5 stars to Soso and put Warren at a 4 star. I think they are both worthy of 5 stars but if I could only choose on for 5 stars hands down I'd pick Warren. What impresses me about Warren is looking at him and the moves he has I'd never guess he's any where close to 240 lbs. He just moves too good to be that size.

We are fortunate to get a great back like Warren. I think he will fit Charlie's schemes perfectly. He will have a better line in the next two years (it could not be worse

) and I look for huge things from him.

That being said, I would dearly love to have Soso. His speed, fluidity and big play ability would be great here too.

But Mr. Warren is here, he wants to be here and that's what thrills me the most. We are getting kids that are going to work their asses off, play hard and bring it home for their team, Coach and school. I can't wait.

Two thoughts:

1. Please, let's not do the alternating series-no-matter-what again this year.
2. I hope Warren gets the majority of carries, while JG splits time with Catalon (depending on in-game circumstances, of course).

^^ I have to agree. I don't like RBs by committee (or by rotation) either. With Ricky and Shon, it worked well in 1995 because Ricky was a fullback the first year and the Mackovic O allowed both to be on the field most of the time that year.

This post was made just before going to the new 2015 platform. Post as normal after it if you wish.

Re: Chris Warren’s coin flip

Shon Mitchell was a Jr. when Ricky was a Freshman. The next year Shon was hampered by injuries and we also had Priest back from injury.

The key with any Freshman RB is his ability to pick up the pass blocking scheme. You do not see that in highlight films. I like Foreman as the second stringer to start the season.

I also think JGray is going to get it this year and run for many many yards!!!!!! Getting him off the field is going to be tough, assuming the injuries and the nagging hurting are done. Hopefully, he gets Senior Vision and sees the light ala Fozzy!!!!!

And Priest was on the sideline, until St Louis of course...
