Chip Brown article

A great OC KNOWS what his team can do, because he has taught them and observed them. Sometimes I think Greg is guessing. That's a no-no.

However, the conservatism blamed on Greg has always been misplaced. The knock on GD when he got here was that he would throw it every down, with five wide, given the chance.

There's a few things I'd like to see in our offense that I don't really consider to be "trick plays".

I'd like to see us put a man in motion sometimes to get a better read on the defense.

I'd like to see some play action passing with the QB under center.

I'd like to see us throw the ball to a receiver on the run in full stride.

I'd like to see us throw the ball over the middle more. I know it's more dangerous, but the risk/reward is attractive. Defensive backs consider the sideline to be their ally for a reason.

More than anything, I'd like to see much less predictability. The attitude that we don't care if the other team knows what we're going to run, that we'll beat them on execution, just doesn't work against good teams. I'd like to see us line up on 3rd and 4 and not be able to guess the play just from looking at the formation.

None of this is trickery. It's just less conservative.

i'd like to see more tony jeffrey end around
i'd like to see more brett robin shovel pass
i'd like to see more henry melton run into the line

This is obviously through my unsophisticated football eyes but we never seem to have a counter off our "base plays". Our plays do not seem to setup anything.

And if you have enough talent on Defense a team can load up on our base plays and shut us down.

My best example is what Oregon did to us in the Holiday Bowl.

They ran that same end around that we did with Tony Jeffery. For the first 3 qtrs the Ducks ran that play a few times for decent yardage but we were finally starting to stop it.

Then in the 4th they gave it the FB and faked it to the end around and the FB ran right by our LBers for about 15 yard gain.

A few plays later they faked it to the FB faked it to the end around and threw to a wide open TE for another 15-20 yards. All the while, our D was chasing everyone but the TE.
