I've never seen that. Seems pretty similar to lattice multiplication which is what i still use to this day. I probably couldn't do a long equation the normal way.

The chinese way of doing it is an interesting way of visualizing multiplication. The lattice method is exactly like regular multiplication but with a ridiculous box drawn around it.
