China polluting the western U.S.

Pushing for more air pollution controls in the U.S., especially on the West coast, is a huge waste of time if a decent portion of the pollution is coming from China. Cali is busy killing off their economy to reduce air pollution. Meanwhile, China does whatever the hell they want. Any further regulation in Cali would be like blowing out a candle while your neighbor has a bonfire blazing.

This shouldn't surprise anybody. Westerners (Europeans and Americans) are the only major industrial powers that give even a little bit of a **** about the environment. If China can make more money by poisoning their air, they will, and sure enough, they have some of the dirtiest air in the world.

And of course, the environmental movement is mostly about weakening the West and capitalistic nations rather than about actually helping the environment, so their outrage is present but more subdued than it would be if a Western capitalistic nation was as indifferent to the environment as China is.

I grew up in Amarillo, Texas near a factory which had a red and white smoke stack that belched white or black smoke and looked exactly like the ones in the picture in the link. I'd say China is about where the U.S. was in the 50s, but, sadly, that's light years ahead of most of the third world..

China being a huge polluter is no secret. But that same pollution reaching the western US, who is putting strict controls on their own citizens, is a major development IMO. It makes it very hard for places like Cali to argue for tighter controls in the name of air quality when the pollution is going to blow across the ocean regardless of what they do.

It's time for the idiot tree-huggers out there to put the courage of their convictions on the line and start protesting China. If any of them wish to go to China to protest, I encourage our government to subsidize their trip.

If it is all about the environment, then why not start with the biggest polluters on all these global treaties?

I say we put up giant fans up and down the west coast from mexico to Canada to blow it all back to them. They would be solar powered of course.
