Chiles to WR . . . sort of

Excuse me... make that "one" of RT's roles. Screens, reverses, etc. Get him the ball in space. We seriously have about 14 WR's on scholarship already.

I don't disagree with anything in that article at all.

We need playmakers who can take it to the house. Last year I had heard that Chiles and Charles were essentially neck and neck in the 40 (the winner was always the one with the better start). True or not, he is damn fast. I would love to be able to get him the ball more, in any capacity.

First off I am all for Chiles getting more playing time. But based on what I saw last year there is no way he runs close
to 4.3 in the 40.

There have to be a few boise st. trick play formations they could put him in for. LIke put him in backfield, motion him out to WR behind a couple other wideouts, throw him a screen pass and he can then run or have option to throw to the ghost.

I'm not sure if he runs a 4.3 40, but I remember seeing high school footage during Chiles' recruitment and being blown away by his speed and ability to run in open space. I'm talking Reggie Bush without the NCAA violations.

The kid's got to buy into it, or it's a useless cause. If all he wants is to be a quarterback, and is not concerned about helping his team win by using his other abilities and cooperating with the coaching staff, then it is wasting everyone's time getting him into another position.

If he needs to put all his time in at QB in order to improve his skillset enough to be the #1 guy, and that's what he wants, then that's what he should do. He also wants to see the field. Mack seems to be telling him that he has no chance to see the field as a QB, barring an injury to Colt, unless he improves greatly at QB, or learns some other plays/positions. Hopefully it will motivate him to work to refine his passing technique, or maybe his pass catching abilities. Everyone wants him on the field, using his talent and helping to win games.

I would think just having another playmaker on the field would make the defense have to adjust. If UT runs a reverse or 2 early in a game and then later on put in both Chiles and Cosby at WR you have to be aware of a possible reverse or reverse pass. On a double reverse you have 2 guys with speed who the defense knows can both throw the ball as well. Speed and versatility on the field is always a good thing.

I could see Chiles on the field, say in the first three quarters, as a WR, flanker, slot, kick returner, whatever, contributing toward putting the game so far out of reach that he could come in at QB in the fourth quarter as his motivation.

hornpharmd,

It would be nice to have options on the field. But we all know that this isn't how our offense it ran. We'll run one reverse in a game. It'll be some chump play that will result in 5-15 yards, and we won't see it a again until the next game.

As for a 'WR' throwing a pass, we might see something like that once in a season. It's never an actual threat though, and defenses know that.

I don't want to hijack this thread or start a new one but according to Sherrod Harris' bio on MBTF:

REDSHIRT FRESHMAN (2007)
Appeared in two games after suffering a knee injury in fall camp ... saw his first collegiate action in a victory against Rice ... also played in UT’s victory at Iowa State ... redshirted in 2006.

He's now listed as SO-SQ on the roster.

I'm apparently not the only one puzzled by this announcement. If Mack is dead set on Chiles being our No. 2 QB, then JC should be working out at that position only, not splitting time as a WR. His passing definitely needs to improve, but I think he could still be a star at QB.

However, if they have given up on Chiles and decided Harris is our No. 2, then why waffle? Move him to WR/RB now so he can be working on his receiving & running during "unsupervised" summer workouts & 7-on-7.

It just seems like Mack is trying to have it both ways, keeping his promise to JC while getting him the ball in other ways. Maybe a little "tough love" is in order.

Moving Chiles to WR seems like a good way to upgrade the team at two positions. As mentioned above, he needs to be buying into the decision. Hopefully, he will be able to see that it is in his best interest.
