Mmmmm... meat!

dsc09615we7.jpg

That was a big ole slab of lomo buried under some deeelicious potaters. By the way, don't limit yourself to just beef. The last time we went, I ate a lot of rabbit, venison and boar (particularly while in Bariloche). There's plenty of great food to enjoy!

Don't pass up LA BRIGADA either when looking at steak houses.San Telmo- on Estados 465 (y Bolívar)Recoleta- on Peña (y Puerryedon)You don't get 500 sides like at La Cabrada, but there are more options and the food was delicious. A friend of mine and I split a salad, a bottle of wine, and a steak a la pimienta (traditional "Steak au poivre"). It came with some potatoes au gratin (for the most part) and it was enough for two people not trying to stuff themselves. Delicious and a total of ~US$48 with tax & tip for two people.TIPS-
Have a drink at the Park Hyatt
(Recoleta) on their patio. (My female friend had "High Tea" for about Ar$70/person. I had a beer another time at about Ar$17/each.) This is a former house (~palace) turned into a hotel. Their backyard is amazing.

Enter on the Alvaer side between Rodriquez Peña and Montevideo. Beatiful building.

At least check out the inside of the Hotel Alvear Palace
(Recoleta) on the corner of Ayacucho & Alvear.

My friend also had High Tea here (also around Ar$70/person) and I had Sunday brunch here (Ar$190/person + Ar$20/per tip = Ar$210/per... or around US$65-US$70/person.. ). It was very pleasant, but probably not worth the money. But a very nice hotel to check out and they have an interior bar. This bar is not as nice as the outdoor patio of the Park Hyatt.

Take a collapsible umbrella
. They sell them down there, but if you have a good one you like, you might as well take it. Rain happens.

LEATHER Goods
-

There are tons of places that sell leather jackets et al on "Calle Florida" (Florida Street... the pedestrian street) and in the streets around there. (Microcenter) But, there is a street on the other side of Palermo that is lined with leather stores.

Start at 666 Murillo
(both the address and the store name) and then go to the stores around there. Nice goods for a fraction of the US prices. AND, they give a 10% Discount for items bought with CASH
. Here's 666's website: The Link

-Take comfortable walking shoes.
-Take plenty of photo cards or a way to download/backup your images.
-Prepare to eat a LOT OF BEEF, but try to find vegetables whenever you can. They aren't always available, so you have to get 'em when you can.
-Take naps.
-Drink Red Bull and/or SPEED (local imitation) before
eating dinner for maximum effect.

There are bars, resto-bars, boliches (discos) and more, but remind me who you're going with.

EAT TONS OF ICE CREAM!!!
-#1 PERSICO
is the semi-consensus best
-#2 Close second VOLTA
is easier to find (Ayacucho y Quintana)
-#3 Freddo
is everywhere and was founded by the grandfather of the Persico & Volta founders.
-SAN TELMO- I'm spacing, but it is on Estados Unidos just off of Defensa (towards Bolivar). I love this place, but watch out! The Mint is FUERTE!!!
-Try others on your walks. They are hit & miss, but usually they are cheaper,

Milion
(spelled with an accent on the second "i".- Here's their site: The Link It is in Barrio Norte. On Parana (between Santa Fe & Marcelo T. Alvear).

I went there my friend from LA's last night and she asked "Why didn't we come here before?!?!?!?!" I went there my last night in BA and my 20 year old Miami/ 1/2 Cubanita asked me "How come I haven't come here before?"

It's easiest to get a cool seat earlier in the week, but the upper level isn't open until Thursday night-> the weekend. Pretty good food, good drinks, great house/vibe/music. Nice back patio/yard for eating as well... an amazing "space" (as they say in NYC).

You're going to hear a TON of English at Milion because it is about 70% foreigners and 30% well off locals. The average porteno can't afford Ar$19 specialty drinks. (Frozen Mojitos...)

That's all for now. I've got to go to Happy Hour in Santa Monica.

Chau chico y suerte,

Nappy

Napoleon, have you gone or know anyone that's gone to Antarctica from Chile/Argentina? Any advice on finding a cheap, yet safe, trip down there? I'll be back in Chile early next year. Thanks!

Calafate is supposed to be amazing - ask ldogg - he should provide some insight. I"m not sure if Antartica + cheap + safe is possible. You might want to look into just a trip down to Ushuaia. I can hook you up with a travel agent in Bariloche who worked with us when we went there.

Napoleon - great insight. Thanks for posting all that... we can all use more tips.

Thanks for the info. Definitely a summer trip. What I was interested in was the short trip that involves a flight to the Chilean polar base Frei. I don't have a huge desire to spend a lot of time on a boat, especially since one just sank, and because I heard the Drake Passage is rough.
Appreciate your help!

EDIT: well crap, the blog is sponsored by porn links so I can't post a link for it...

Try to run into this girl: <youtube link deleted>

fun video to practice your spanish.. her blog is caliente!!!

CHANGING MONEY & GETTING INTO TOWN
You will need to change money immediately at the airport.

You will need money for your taxi and other stuff when you first get in. Buenos Aires isn't a very Credit Card Friendly town. Nice places take cards, but many places don't.

*** BUT DON'T CHANGE MONEY AT BAGGAGE CLAIM!! You will walk all the way out through customs, see an information desk (island), walk around that, keep walking out through the secured area. Finally you will see a TAXI desk where you can arrange rides into the city. At this point, make a U-turn to your RIGHT and there is the Banco Nacional de Argentina. THIS is where you want to change your cash.***

TAXI INTO TOWN

The going rate for getting from EZE to town was about Ar$80 when I left. One place charged Ar$70, but others charged Ar80, Ar$90, & Ar$95. It may have gone up, but I had a friend who didn't arrange transportation at a stand and paid Ar$160!! to get into town.
That's ridiculous.

You pass these stands on the way to get you money. Just outside of the security area there is a general taxi location. This was the place that was Ar$70. Use it if possible.

suerte chicos

Click here The Link for the view from below at the Park Hyatt. If you have a beer where I suggested, you will be sittin on that upper level of umbrellas.

There is a HUGE tree on the property to the right of this picture (possibly now owned by the Park Hyatt) that covers the right half of this yard (you are only seeing the left half in this picture. But if you're not below the tree and it is the middle of the day (not when I suggest going), then you might need an umbrella.

This is a "not so great" photo of the backyard.

I suggest going around 4pm-5pm. The women will (hopefully) be inside having High Tea (somewhat ridiculous) and you will be casually relaxing, looking down this yard (and at the 15 story Hyatt building at the base of this yard) thinking...

"I could deal with being a BILLIONAIRE!!"

Because if you had a billion, you would have a backyard like this one.

suerte chico

Antarctica-

I was just rereading a Facebook thread and it turns out that a casual friend of mine (I wish she were more
wink.gif
) is going to Mendoza and ANTARCTICA just after Christmas.

I'll try to pump her for information. She wrote the following, so I guess that she's been to Chile. (That and the fact that her Facebook Travel Map says that she's hit: Antofagasta, Arica, Iquique, Santiago, Valparaiso, & Vina del Mar)

Insider tip for Argentina...(I spent the summer there)

Go to a bar called 878 (ochosieteocho) located at 878 Thames st. There is no sign for the bar, you just go knock on the door and they let you in. A really hip, nice place with lots of young beautiful argentine women. Not badly priced, and you can eat there as well. Not sure its open before Midnight, however. Go check it out...
