Why did the terrorist people want the baby?
They were part of the Human Project, which was a fringe organization trying to develop a cure for female infertility. Presumably the first pregnant woman in 17 years would unlock this mystery.

How did he get involved with the terrorist?
He used to date Julianne Moore, who is a leader of the group.

How did the whole world become infertile?
no one knows, and it doesn't really matter.

Was the boat supposed to take them to the Human Project and what exactly was the human project?
yes and see above

Great movie.

1. The "terrorists" wanted the baby for their own political gain. They were disinfranchised immigrants that knew that having the only newborn baby on the planet would be incredibly valuable, especially since it came from a so called "refugee". They were afraid that the government would lie to the public about the baby's true origins and continue oppression of the refugees.

2. Clive Owen knew the group through his ex-wife, who had been involved with the activists.

3. I think they alluded to a virus, but they didn't really get into that topic, as it was unnecessary to the plot, in my opinion. However it got there, the world was infertile and this woman was the first pregnant woman in almost 20 years, that's what mattered most.

4. The Human Project could have been real or could have been legend, we'll never know. It was talked about as if it was a group of humanitarians/scientists that were working to help the human race regain the ability to reproduce. Supposedly, it was free of agenda or political ties, therefore attractive to a oppressed minority looking to safely have her baby.

We also don't know if that boat was the Human Project or not. It could have been them, or it could have been the government coming to capture them. The heroism of Clive Owen's character and his martyrdom in shepherding the pregnant mother across a war zone to hopeful salvation was the point of the story. He died valiantly to save the human race. The fate of mankind is unknown, but he accomplished his mission before dying.

Awesome movie, but it doesn't wrap everything up in a nice little bow for the viewer. I loved that. Also, as I've said on this board before, the scene where he leads the mother and her newborn through an active war zone is one of the most tense scenes in movie history and masterfully done.

Just to clear up - the terrorist were not connected to the Human Project. They just claimed to be taking her to the HP, but they were lying.

Charleston - nice sig

spoilers...

the best part of the ending is that we, as viewers, are finished when owen's character is finished. when he dies is when we bow out of the movie. the story is really his, not the girl's or the baby's or julianne moore's.

a lot of people focus on the girl and the baby as the nexus of the story when they are not.

Stunning movie. Saw it in the theatre here in Chicago. This movie received little buzz and was released at a weird time, but it's definitely one of the best sci-fi films ever.

Great, under-appreciated movie that depicts a bleak and violent future which, I'm sad to say, didn't seem all too far-fetched.

the most amazing part of that scene was that they only had one shot at it. there were no cuts, and they wanted that one continuous shot, but they were basically destroying the building in the scene, so if anything ****** up, the scene was ****** up.

they did it right, and the handheld, non-cut scene of that last battle was just nothing short of genius. just amazing.

Not the infertility part, the deterioration of society part. I wasn't suggesting that it could happen anytime soon, just that it didn't seem impossible.

Yes, I am a cynic. No, I do not hate the world.
