What is a good Austin place for chicken fried steak? I have had it at Hoovers and it is excellent. Has anyone had it at the Broken Spoke?

Threadgill's sucks farts from a monkey's *** nowadays.

Hoover's is a good choice.

Had Tony's southern comfort food on E. 6th yesterday -- tasty, but tough.

The BEST in the area is at Cafe 290 in Manor. As big as your head, crunchy, and tender.

Austin Land and Cattle had funky gravy. So does Ray's. Funky gravy is a bad thing.

Ray's gravy is indeed funky, but there's something I like about it every now and then.

I really want to try the CFS at Springhill Cafe out on 71 at 620, as well as R.O.'s Outpost a little farther west. The first time I went to Springhill was on a Lenten Friday, so I had the catfish (which was pretty good). And I've only had pie at R.O.'s, but that kicked serious ***.

I need to get out there soon.

orngbld,
I'll give you the funky gravy, but I don't think it's that bad. But the meat and the breading at ALCC is awesome.

make the drive to Johnson City's Hill Country Cupboard. Worth it.

Hoover's is tough to beat.

Springhill is really good.

Hyde Park Bar and Grill is up there.

Thanks for the tips. Dad is coming in for graduation and wants a CFS. I will probably take him to Hoovers or to Manor.

Hoovers = Cafe 290: Shitloads of good food. But if you have the time, do Cafe 290, I like the atmosphere better and I think the deserts are freakin' out of this world.

Hoovers=greatness, whole menu up and down.

A little off topic, but the chicken fried chicken at Shady Grove is greatness as well.

Springhill is awesome. You need to hit their buffett when it's all you can eat CFS and catfish. Sometimes it's all you can eat enchiladas and catfish. Last time I had a CFS at The Spoke, it was great.

I just went to Sprinhill based on this thread and it was incredible. Too bad I am starting my diet up tomorrow and won't be able to go back for a little while.

Springhill is great.Austin Land and Cattle is amazing, but if you go there, you might as well get a real steak...but my fave...

the Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls.

111,
I agree that if you're at Austin Land & Cattle, you should get a steak, but if you really have an urge for a CFS, it's damn good.

Johnson City's Hill Country Cupboard
Springhill -whoever came up with all you can eat CFS and catfish needs an award.
George's Bar Waco has my favorite
