Chicago Trip Report w/ Pics

I was inspired by tropheus' Costa Rica report and Nuclear Bear's questions about what's so great about Chicago, so I thought I'd share some thoughts and pics about our Chicago trip from last month.

We took my in-laws, my son, my brother, two brothers in law and family to Chicago for a long weekend. We stayed at a 3 BR rental flat 3 blocks southwest of Wrigley Field. Great location. We were a couple blocks walk to the East from the madness on Clark Street (think 6th Street with more sports bars) and and couple blocks walk to the West from the more refined but still very fun Southport district (think Warehouse District with more shopping). Tons of stuff to do for everyone.

Took in two Cubs games. Unbelievable experience. My son rated it the second best sports moment of his life behind the Rose Bowl National Championship game, and I agree. The atmosphere around Wrigley on game day is party central. Lots of very good restaurants within walking distance, too many bars to count. Had Moroccan at Andalous about 5 blocks south of Wrigley and unbelievable Italian at La Scarola east of downtown (took the El - great dive bar next door). There were so many cool looking bars and restaurants, you could make 20 trips and not hit them all.

Walked almost everywhere, and when we didn't walk we took buses or the El. Very user friendly transportation with a 5 day transportation pass and easy to understand system for the inexperienced rider. Very clean and safe city. Even down in the subway late at night with the in-laws, we still felt safe - even joined in a nice rendition of Under the Boardwalk with a street musician in the subway while waiting for the Redline at around midnight.

Highly recommend this trip and we are seriously considering making this a yearly summer trip.

Mac,
That's my youngest son, James. He just graduated high school. Brad, our oldest, is still in Iraq so he missed the Chicago trip, much to his disappointment. He's supposed to be back in the States in October, but for now he's riding around in a Humvee somewhere west of Baghdad. Here's a pic of him in December after basic training graduation:

MidTex, thanks for the report.

I am going to Chicago in mid August with my wife for our anniversary. Cubs question for you. We are going to the Cubs/Cards game on Thursday afternoon when we go. It looks like you had bleacher seats. How did you get them? Are bleacher seats that much better than sitting in the other part of the stadium?

How hard was scalping?

Yeah, shoulda got a pic with the Hook 'em in front of Wrigley. I took 600 pics of the trip and still thought of a bunch of stuff I shoulda taken when I got back.

I think the drunk girl spilled some beer on herself. Her husband/boyfriend kept telling us that if we pissed her off she'd show us her tits, so we started flipping her off, calling her a slut, etc. but it didn't work. Not sure why she'd need to be pissed off before exposing herself. Just kinda weird actually. She was posing by the 'Bama sign because she was from there. We flashed the Hook'em at her and she flipped us off for that.

Mac - Yeah, it was a real bummer that he wasn't there. We're hoping to make it to his homecoming at Ft. Lewis in October. He's made us promise to bring a cooler of Shiner to the homecoming ceremony.

TheFied,
We got our tickets the first day they were available to the public, so I didn't go the scalper route except for one ticket which I bought on Stubhub. The Stubhub pickup spot is one block north of the stadium, so if you decide to go that route it's pretty handy to pickup your tickets on gameday.

Scalpers work the streets and the sportsbars around the stadium. Have no idea what they were asking. Thursday games wouldn't normally be bad price wise, but since it's St. Louis you should expect to pay a serious premium. Face value for bleachers will be in the $45 range, and for St. Louis I expect you'll pay more than that.

As for bleachers vs. regular seats, I can't say much since I only sat in the bleachers. It was a total blast. Lots of drunken fun, but everyone was very good natured and having a good time. I would think with the Cards in town, it will be pretty rowdy wherever you sit.

MidTex, appreciate it. Yeah, the Cards are their big rivals so it should be fun and not cheap. :)

I have heard that the scalpers sorta overrun the regular fans trying to unload tix. Did you notice that?

What do you recommend for bars in Wriggleyville to grab a drink before/after the game?

Thanks!

MidTex, FYI, I've spotted Shiner in some local Safeways up here (a little north of Tacoma), so your son might get lucky.

Headed to Chi-town this week (for the 1st time) for Thanksgiving.

Any more reccomendations for cool stuiff to do this week.

MidTex -

Going to Chicago this spring for a low key bachelor party. Where/how did you find the flat that you rented? We want to see a couple of Cubs games and do a little drinking and eat tons of red meat. Plus, the ladies from chi-town are really friendly and love to have a good time.
